  • Tower Hobbies 990 mm F4U Corsair

Woo Hoo! I received my Tower Hobbies 990mm Corsair today. Build was quick and easy. I wanted a hand-launchable 900+mm airplane. This appears to fit the bill. As in all of my aircraft, I installed a Lemon Rx with Gyro in her. I will be running 3S 2200's through her. I will let you know how the maiden goes. This is the perfect size for me. No retracts to get torn off no flaps to malfunction, just simple seat of the pants hand launch flying fun. I fear it may be underpowered but I guess I will find out. Peace.....

Edit : 6/22/18 I am not exactly sure why, but the ESC has to be recalibrated each time I turn it on. I wonder if there is some way to avoid this. You have to wait for the beep, turn throttle on high, wait for another beep, and return throttle to zero before it initializes with the three beep signal. I got the CG balanced perfectly with moving my 2200 3S all the way forward. I was going to take her out this a.m. but the wind came up suddenly. I also have trouble getting the prop to seat correctly. It does not want to tighten. I can manage to tighten it if holding a wrench, but that should not be necessary. I will write more as I discover the good and the bad. Peace

The wind died down today. I had the best flying day ever. I did my maiden flight on my 990mm Corsair. It flew like a champ. It was very predictable and very steady. I ran 7- 2200 mah 3S lipos through her. I started out cautious with only a 5-minute timer on the first two flights. I then increased my time to 8 minutes and ultimately 10 minutes with still over 30% power remaining. This is now my go-to airplane. It will join my T-28 Trojan and my F4F Wildcat as my most flown aircraft. I will order another as soon as I am finished here. I may order a couple more and paint them in different (non scale) colors. The Lemon Rx performed flawlessly and the loops, spins and rolls were exhilarating. Most of my flying was scale though. I kept it at just over half throttle most of the time. I cannot say enough good about this airplane. It just today has become my favorite. Peace.

That is normal with the ESC/motor in the Tower Corsair, Hellcat, P-51B and D, and the Flyzone Zero, just to name a few. That is their fail-safe in case you plug everything in with the throttle set to high....
Glad you like her!! I love flying mine!!

I was so excited I ordered another and may order the Hellcat as well. I love the size and the ability to hand launch. The price is so low even when I manage to crash one I am not out that much cash. You can hear the air swoosh by when you make high speed low passes. A great airplane all around.

EDIT 7/13/18: I received my f6f Hellcat yesterday. I maidened her today. She flew like a dream I am hoping I will be able to use a two blade prop instead of the three blade that it comes with. A two blade prop is more suitable for belly landings. Just like the Corsair, she flew steady and predictable. The Hellcat and the Corsair are great airplanes.

I have had the Hellcat for several years. The neighbor kids shot holes in it with airsoft guns... I flew low and slow so they could hit it. It crashed into the wall of the house when my neighbor was flying it. I lost it in the sun and hit the trees... LOL Anyway, it looks like crap. but after a little time in the sun and some glue, it always popped back into shape. Still flying it and have a new one in the box JIC.... Great value for the money. The Hellcat balances better than the Corsair. The battery can be a little more in the battery compartment!!! LOL

I am thinking the TH. Hellcat will be my next airplane. I have heard nothing but good things about this airplane.

I have an A3-L gyro in mine. Flies in just about any wind you can imagine. I have landed with no forward ground speed in heavy headwind. I do have expo on the elevator to keep it from being so pitch sensitive...

I spent another day at the flying field today. My 990 mm Corsair performed flawlessly once again. I only got a chance to fly two -2200s through her. I flew a couple of my fms 800 mm aircraft as well. Unfortunately the wind came up and I came back home. I cannot say enough good about this airplane. It is the best. The CG was easily obtained with no added weight and there are no retracts or landing gear to get torn off. No flaps to malfunction either. Just great satisfying easily controlled flight. Another thing I like is the ample room for the battery placement. A couple of my batteries are showing signs of swelling. They will have to be replaced soon but until then, they fit easily in my Corsair. As I said earlier, I came home from the maiden and immediately ordered another. Peace!

I was at the field at 8 a.m. this morning with Gus, my "co-pilot". We ran 6 batteries through my new 990 mm Corsair. I can honestly say that in my opinion, TH has created the perfect RC airplane. I would not change a thing except for the ESC power supply connector. It has some sort of "Super Tigre" connector and I use EC3's. I have to solder the EC3's onto the ESC as I have seen no adapters that I could use. That is a small price to pay for the perfect RC aircraft. I was so impressed that I ordered another after my maiden flight. I am not sure, but I may paint this one in a different color scheme. lol Peace to you all.
