  • 1450 FMS P51 Motor upgrade

I've searched the forum and cant find the answer so here's the question, I purchased the Big Beautiful Doll P51 V8 and went with the motor upgrade. after I installed the upgraded motor which is From 540kv to 580kv when I give it full throttle the motor cuts out like its missing? I'm using a Gecko 85a esc and wondering if anyone out there knows what's going on before I smoke something. thanks

Sounds like you may need to re-initialize the ESC.

Hi Jetlag, first of all, you might want to phone MotionR/C and get the answer straight from them, or you could drop Pilot Ryan a message
        http://www.hobbysquawk.com/private.p...on=send&uid=53
That will take some of the guesswork out of it.

Good luck and let us know what it was, we'll file it away it the database!

That's a tough one.  Go into support on the MotionR/C webpage and send them a message, attach the video link to the message, they'll get right back to you.

RE: 1450 FMS P51 Motor upgrade

Looks like you are loosing commutation. With lower winds (higher KV) it is sometimes difficult for the ESC to get an idea where the rotor is. The inductance signal from the other windings is sometimes lost.

So make sure all your solder joints are good.

I've had much the same issue with a ZTW ESC with the default auto timing. If the solder joints are good try setting the timing to high 25° to 30° and set the frequency low 8 kHz for most outrunners. All my ZTW ESC are set up close to this for my outrunners.

I really like to use their ESC box http://www.motionrc.com/ztw-lcd-esc-programming-card/

I have a Hobbywing 85a Esc, Im gonna swap it and See what happens, I put it on High timing(Gecko esc) and when I plugged in the battery the esc Recognized the battery but that last beep didnt occur and the motor acted up worst.

Yeah, let us know what happens and what solution you come up with. I've never seen that one before. I've seen where the 40amp Dynam ESC has a timing issue with some of their planes, like the P-47. Most just swapped it out with the 50 amp and it cured it.
But that sound in yours is something I've never heard before.

It's funny how it sounds almost like a real engine start up though.  :D

Swapping components is a time honored way to troubleshoot. Has the Gecko ever work on the 540kv motor? Or are the 580kv motor and Gecko new?

                            Both new
New and unproven. Do check the solder joints if the problem continues.

Ok guys work day done, went home and put the Original 70a back in and all gone. Runs great so im thinking the guy at the hobby store has soldered bad connectors on ?? Either way that ESC is bad which I really find hard to believe or the connections are bad.

                                Hobby shops solder on connectors?

Take off the heat shrink and take a look at the joint or better yet re-flow the solder and run a few test.

Hobby shop did the connectors but now in the manual there is another selection for motor start up power. It defaults at 30% and goes to 50%. Im wondering if it didnt have the juice it needed now? And im alittle nervous to give it more in fear of overheating. This is very perplexing

That setting is more to protect gearboxes and motor mounts

Now for the dirt on the Gecko 85A ESC
by default they come stock preset on the start up rate or program 9 at 30%
this is for helis or Rc models with gear box or spline run items. At this preset you can slowing build up to full power but it will not allow one to give it juice you'd need maybe to pull up out of a dive or do a quick in flight correction. it would cut out like the vid I posted. now Ive set the start up rate or program 9 to 50% and its great. true linear throttle, crazy but got it. thanx for all the input

Great!! Thank you for closing the loop. I had a ZTW loose time on the down leg of some maneuvers. I'll go back and check this out.

                                        Have you flow her?
