ok that newbie is me. first of all I didn't think I was that close to the trees. and I thought it would be cool to stick a camera on it. I think the wind pushed the plane around right before I got to the tree line and the SAFE stuff was taking over my control. I wanted to keep turning left but it went straight.
It took a 2" chunk out of the wing. and broke the cowl and a little bit of the tip of the prop. I could still fly it actually. these Apprentice sts planes can take a pretty good lick. it makes a pretty cool video. I sacrificed $70 in parts just for your entertainment.

serpentracer We've all been there, and revist there often! As long as no one is physically hurt, it's almost always helpful to crash. I learn far more when crashing than I do when flying.

Besides, now that your bird is repaired, you'll likely find it's more enjoyable to fly. We like to say that repaired birds fly better than new ones!

Thanks for sharing . This hobby is an interesting one, and no matter how advanced a person gets there will be occasional errors that occur. It's an everlasting learning experience, and the crash will teach you a lot and so will errors in the future. If anyone says they never make an error or crash an RC aircraft, I'd have a very difficult time believing the person. Errors occur less often as experience grows, but they will be made (I made one today, LOL ). One great part about it is how a person controls their attitude and outlook towards it. You already sound positive and learning from it. That's a large part of how to stay in the hobby and being successful with it.

You are very lucky the plane fell to the ground. Every time I've hit a tree my plane gets stuck 40' up and any attempt to recover the plane usually causes additional damage.

Buddy , if you have not crashed into a tree, your not flying lol ! I flew a Bearcat into a tree, problem was it was about 50 ft high and landed locked into the tree better then I land on the ground.
I watched that model for weeks and regardless of the weather, wind, ect, its just stay locked.
After winter, I went back to that field and it was gone, so I never found out what happened to it but hey someone may be enjoying it

As you graduate into "intermediate" and "expert", you will no longer crash into trees. At that point in your career, the trees actually reach out and grab your plane.

Every time I've hit something, I thought the ground-based object was farther away than my plane. Everybody else err in this same direction? If so, I guess that is a general piece of advice...."objects in sky are farther away than they appear."

An experienced pilot once told me - if you don't want to fly into trees, don't fly near them.

So anyway, just finished repairing the last plane I flew into a tree. The most shocking part is always realising that you had been flirting with the thing all day up until that point. Depth perception is hard lol.

I am fortunate to now fly at a tree-less field lol . However the field is lined by corn that can get as high as 15ft ! So sure enough this summer while coming in for a landing the wind was really changing direction and speed all day. I decided that I would not use flaps because the wind was 12 to 15 mile gust but dropping down to nothing so it was crap shoot. After my second pass I said I have to get down, I flying a 6 cell and I know I am getting low.
I am about 200ft from clearing the corn, low approach and I skim the top of the corn, it’s reaches out ( lol ) and grabs my plane.
This was one of those days when the corn is your friend and gently cradles the model about 12” from the ground .
Its amazing how corn can be your best friend or worse enemy

I've been flying off and on for about 6 years. Below are pics of my beautiful Parkzone Stinson foamie doing a flyby, and the pics of post crash-into-a-tree damage. It hit the big sycamore tree exactly head on at maybe 30 mph. All the pueces fell into a big blackberry patch. 2 hrs and much blood later, you can see what was left of my dear friend. I picked up every little piece of foam and plastic. Well, the after pics show how easily heavily damaged foamies can be repaired. Everything, including wing, was reglued. I only had to replace a few plastic bits and the damaged motor. It now flies just as perfect as when new. I didnt even have to re trim it. I loved Parkzone! Sorry for my lack of expertise in posting pics.

In the first image, the flyby, you can see the big sycamore in the distance. Plane on stand is as it looks today. Go foam!
