Wow, this looks amazing. Great to see the Ultra Sport design resurrected. I wonder how feasible it would be to install retracts?

It looks like it's already set up for retracts, I'd assume motion will have electrical retracts for it. I had the 40 size Great planes ARF and it flew great, I'm seriously thinking of getting this one, the colors are nice and visible. I just wish they had plug in wings for ease of transport and storage. I have a small car and a 62" wing takes a lot of room and prevents me from taking another plane.

So the retracts are over $100, hopefully will be in stock soon. May be other retracts can be fitted with minimum mods.

Does any one know for sure what the covering is? stick on or shrink? to me it looks to be stick on, pros and cons of course.

FYI, according to the manual, not all surfaces are installed, they are fitted. Only ailerons are glued in, the elevators and rudder need to be glued of course.

I would almost buy just for the RCM magazine stickers!!!!! It is nice to see this offered again.

I know it's too late, but I wish they had a bolt on tail as they have in the Kaos 60 ARF and the Escapade ARF's. Also, wish they would include retracts/strut dimensions in the manual to encourage sales when the stock retracts are not in stock or are too expensive (0ver $100).

Otherwise, a great looking, and I'm almost certain, EX GP flying model :)

OMG this ARF is awful. The covering is self-stick, not iron-on and the color comes off if you clean it with alcohol. Glow fuel would make a mess. The manual shows an elevator and rudder control setup that does not match the parts included and either setup would require modifications to the fuselage and/or elevators. And the wing has no dihedral so it won't fly like an Ultra Sport. No dihedral on a low-wing airplane makes it unstable in level flight. I would have returned it, but I already threw away the packing material.

Incidently, the lead photo in Motion's Taipan listing is an Ultra Sport 60 built by a modeler here in the US from a Great Planes kit. Look carefully and you can detect the dihedral in the wings and the fuselage to wing fairings, which the Taipan does not have. They even borrowed his color scheme, but of course the Taipan does not come with the RCM magazine stickers.

The Great Planes Ultra Sport has 2 degrees of dihedral in each wing. It flies smooth and stable in any attitude, upright, knife edge and inverted. The Taipan is a copy of the Ultra Sport in almost all ways, but it has no dihedral and consequently, it will roll off to one side or the other in any attitude. (Curiously, the Taipan instruction manual shows dihedral.) If you want the Taipan to fly like an Ultra Sport you will have to add the dihedral. The picture below shows the wing center joiner with the bottom trimmed 1/8" at each end to create the angle required. Also, a piece of 1/8" balsa sheet is added to the center of one wing and sanded to a widge that is 1/8 inch at the bottom, tapered to flush at the top, to fill the gap when the wing are glued together. With that change, it actually does fly pretty much like an Ultra Sport.

The final straw was the landing gear. I used the fixed gear that was provided in the kit and the wire is so soft that you can easily bend it by hand. And the covering sags as soon as the sun hits it. Today I will be removing all of the equipment and breaking up the airframe to fit it into the garbage can.

Oh well, they can't all be winners.

I bought one of these from New Zealand. Second flight the fuse snapped clean in half. VQ said they’d send a replacement, then blanked my emails. The covering is rubbish & weak. It needs bigger servos all round for ic.
I did add dihedral to match my US60.
it’s repaired now. Retracts fitted & working ok, but will need re-covering with Oracover.

The main photo and a couple of the detail photos are actually the US 60 I built using a Balsaworkbench short kit and RCM plans from Outerzone.

The wing was built, per plans, with a flat top. The only dihedral comes from the rib taper on the wing bottom.

I used the fixed landing gear from the kit. I did not like the provided plastic cut-outs for the open holes in the wing. I made the hole covers from cereal box cardboard and spray paint. I attached them to the wing with thin CA. I used the patch fabric in the kit to cover the leading edge of the plugs to keep them from peeling back. I may cover the rear half of the plugs for additional cleanup if they start peeling.
