  • FMS T28 v4 front retract install. LETS GET PUMPED!

So I went ahead and installed the 003 retract used as mains in the p51 and F4U with different trunnion. I did not take pictures of the process. Basically I took the retract apart and took out the trunnion. Then I drilled the strut hole the rest of the way through. This allows the strut steerable strut slide through. Then put E-Clip on as normal but you need to make sure you tap the strut down after putting e-clip on as far as it will go. We are trying to get tenth of " Tolerance in here or the retract will not open all the way. It will stop at like 9/10ths of the way open as the strut pin hits the jack screw. It will be tight but it can be done and after a few paces the soft jack screw will have set a new glide path on the cam.

You will need to ditch the bay opening setup. But FEAR NOT I have used my powers of rigging and have a solution lol. So i just bent a paper clip the right way and formed it like so. *Picture attached" It basically works like the main inner doors. You also need to cut a small corner of the side plate to allow the steering arm room. You also need to use your old retract mount plate to make 2 new holes on the side plates of the p51 retract for the upper screws. Thats it. This should be plenty. I took it up for a flight and it was ACES

I just ordered a new retract unit for the nose. Mine actuated ok. It just had no holding ability when down due to some misaligned or worn metal parts. I even tried to adjust the slider inside so that the trunion would rest on it better. I think the case deforms or something and allows that trunion to slip so easily. We'll see how good the new one is.

I set it up like that. Less moving parts. Plus the retract is bigger

My SECOND front retract unit is now folding on even the easiest landings. Actually I cannot takeoff because it folds on takeoff too. Talked to Wayne at Motion and he didn't think there was a problem with them. This retract is a problem part. I don't think I will be buying another one. Going to re-think what I fly now.

The attached picture is the grass at the field today which caused my nose gear to fold. It's pretty short.
