Well said OV10. I put the numbers through ecalc and came out to 72A with the 650KV, so the 85A should provide a nice buffer over that estimate. Or if you want to use the stock ESC, I happen to have a spare motor from the FMS 1500 P-47 for 6S if you want..

I'm keeping my Razor 6S power to put in my 1400 F4U after I stuff my "spare" 5060-360kV into the Razor ;)Warbird Charlie

Nice! I was debating tossing mine in my Mustang, which is still the stock Shangri-la, but I'd have to remove the battery tray system to stuff in a 6S. Instead, I'm debating switching to the 580 kv and the Skyraider prop. Just need need to mess around to see if I can shoehorn that prop in the spinner.Originally posted by OV10 View Post

Thanks everyone. I ordered the 650kv motor and it arrived today. I think I'll stay with the stock ESC for now, but may upgrade soon. Like wrongroad, if this thing has ample power, I won't fly full throttle except for a few vertical maneuvers and one or two high speed passes. I was having to fly wide open with the 540kv motor, so I'm hoping to not have to do that with this one.
Thanks!

I wanna build a flying BEAST...lol. :)Originally posted by starcop View PostThe only thing I hear that others are doing is. Installing the 42-58 550Kv ( https://www.motionrc.com/products/fm...rushless-motor ) Slightly larger length can, with a 550Kv RPM. I was told this wakes up the P-51 using a 5S 4000mah pack. It's not a Customer Service recommendation, it's just something that other pilots are trying. I would also, change the propeller to a deeper pitch. I think like any airplane you change the voltage and, the propeller. That should give it more speed that is very noticeable. Again, this is at your own risk, anytime you change a product. The Manufacture won't Warranty a model that has been modified. I hope everyone's having a great winter this far. Keep an eye out for the new aircraft showing up on the website. Matt C/S Rep MRC.
Anyone done this? What do I need to purchase other than the plane? I see this link for the motor upgrade.. Please help, with links OR parts #'s ..I only buy from Motion RC..;)

Hey Lon, been meaning to ask you since Nefi. I'm wondering if 'My Little Gal' would be better off just changing the ESC and running 5s or going a 650kv like Old Crow has and running 4s?
I've thought about running 5s with a 650kv, but haven't run the numbers on it yet. Had a couple of great flights with Old Crow at the end of the season, but the tail wheel locking screw gave out and the head snapped off, so until I can replace the dang thing, she's on the ground. Not that it matters much with 3 feet of snow anyway!!!
Tom, you gotta watch the numbers, that spinner may not take too much. Personally, OC is running a 650kv with an 85A mantis with the zip tie mod for a bit more pitch.

I run my BBD with an FMS 4250-580kv motor and an 85A ESC with the zip tie mod, she hops along pretty nicely, but if you want to go a slightly faster rout, go to the FMS 4258 650kv with an 85A ESC or bigger. I just happen to use 85 A ESC's. If you go this route, you'll also need the 650 motor mount. Lon has a Freewing P-51. I have two myself, its a toss up

I have the original 580 motor and have done the ziptie prop mod for a little more pitch. I have well over a hundred 5s flights with this setup. I still fly 4s on it too. It makes a significant difference. When flying with the 4s, I find myself wanting to run full throttle most the time to get the performance i like with this plane. For me, it's so much more solid in handling at that higher speed, specially in the turns.Originally posted by TomC View PostLon, I was hoping you would chime in..I am looking at the 1450mm BBD P-51.. Are you running the original motor/ prop combo? you just changed the ESC? and run on 5s..Did it change the left torque roll much on take offs? Thanks for you Input..:D
Torque roll on the take offs? Oh yes!! You have to be on your toes even more with the 5s during take offs. Be ALOT more delicate on the throttle, ease into it allowing the tail to come up, and slowly add more throttle and then up elevator and ready to be giving that right rudder. What i tell myself "Scale take-off" to help me from trying to do a short power take off. Attached is a video that will give you an idea of how a typical flights is for me with her.P-51D 1410mm Freewing "Iron Ass" 5s with 85a ESC. Prop Mod. One few seconds of full throttle pass at about the 4min time. I'm not a need for speed flyer. But...Lon

Well...if i had to do it over again. I would upgrade the motor and not go to 5s for a performance increase. REASON IS, my experience with the P-38. The upgrade motor jumps from the stock 600 to 880, which is more significant than 580 to 650 for sure. But, still running on 4s!! 4s batteries are so much more practical because alot of planes can/do run on the 3600 4s. Sooo, I have these couple 5s batteries, and the only setup i currently own that i can run them in, is the FW P-51. So just for that reason, I'd stay with 4s batteries, and run her more wide open!Originally posted by Grossman56 View PostHey Lon, been meaning to ask you since Nefi. You forgot to point out that the 600 to 880 jump came with an aesthetics cost of having to go with a 2 blade prop...........EEEWWWWWW :rolleyes:Warbird Charlie

LOL!!!! Yes, your right...sigh...But i think i have a solution to that. When I'm at NEFI this year. Like everyone else, I'll have my planes out, all lined up waiting their turns to fly. I'm going to have the 3blade props on her right to the time before flying(a sleeper :) ) Take that minute and switch, then ZOOM!!!:cool:Originally posted by OV10 View Post

No problem! I was actually down in Waco a few months ago for the Airshow. Let me know if you're ever in the area and I'd be happy to open up the field! You could actually throw in a 100A ESC if you wanted, and that would make it work with 5S if you still weren't satisfied, although I think the 650kv alone ought to give it plenty of a kick.
