  • FMS 1400 F4U v3 Corsair Oleo Strut Upgrade

    Hello pilots,
While the crap weather in upstate NY continues to keep me boxed up in the house it just keeps the Mad Modder in me busy...........
Been wanting to get some of my older FMS 1400 sized birds converted over with oleo struts to help their tired airframes from all the grass turf abuse they've seen over the years.
I have 3 in particular and all of them have aft swinging retracts.............F4U Olathe, F6F and P-40E (all have been discontinued)
In 2015 they all got the SmallPartsCNC side plates that I introduced to this forum and now to introduce an oleo strut that is well constructed and CHEAP for these birds.
Low n behold its a freekin HK part !! :Silly:
    https://hobbyking.com/en_us/alloy-ol...pin-trike.html
All three struts are the same length and the larger size wheels on them am gonna be using on the nose of my A6.

So the mod on the Corsair basically involves cutting the steel leg of the original strut to the appropriate length(approx. 25mm out from trunnion)
Then put a wheel collar of 7-8mm thickness with 4mm ID on the shaft first and tighten set screw.
Enlarge the axle hole on oleo to 4mm (5/32).
I use the stock Corsair wheel and bored the axle hole to 5mm to accept an aluminum 5mm x .45mm tube as a sleeve to allow the wheel to turn freely on the 4mm axle shaft without wobble.
Install the wheel to the oleo using this 4mm wheel axle shaft https://www.motionrc.com/products/fr...main-gear-axle
Enlarge the oleo strut shaft mounting hole to approx. 4mm by a depth of 18mm and install on the shaft and mark spots on shaft through set screw holes for flat spot grinding/filing purposes.
I demeled the flat spot and then installed the strut and tightened the set screws and lastly Foam Tac'd all set screws.
Use a 5mm x 40mm 1/16 thick birch ply plate that is glued (also did the little wood screw cause the hole was already there) to the numbered gear door and then that is glued to the trunnion ( I used Zap Goo versus Foam Tac for gluing this )
And lastly paint up the bare ply with white and that is it, had oleo on in less than 2 hrs. These are gonna work great on the other 2 birds in basically the same approach with slight different cut dimensions.
So for less than $50 in parts I can upgrade all three planes.........SWEET.
Here's the finished results of the oleo upgrade to my Olathe Corsair.

Yes the long winters do have an affect on the modeler in all of us. At least we have turned the corner and relief is in sight. However as Spring approaches there are still more projects and not enough time.

Hello Sir! Fantastic, I knew one day someone would place some photos of the FMS Corsair with Metal oleo strut retracts! That's great to see that model with something it should already have. I'm curious why FMS has not done so; or made a upgrade for that matter. Your a scholar and, a gentleman! Thank you, for your efforts to show others! Matt M

Hello stearmanrc and welcome to the Squawk,
I see that rifleman has already extracted the two important links to the parts you'll need from my intro posting for this thread.
Read all of post #1 and you'll have all the detail info that I documented which was required to accomplish this mod.
                    Best regards,

Hello flyinghigh and welcome to the Squawk,
The retracts are the stock FMMRE004 etracts that come on the Corsair which were upgraded with the SmallPartsCNC side plates.
The strut attachment point was modded as described in my first post.

You can’t beat the price. I’m completely shocked with how nice and sturdy they are, I was expecting junk to be honest.
