  • 3D printed 1/72nd Columbia class submarine

This is my 3D printed Columbia class sub (SSBN-826) measuring in at 93" long with a 7-1/8" beam. Based solely on artists conceptual drawings as they just started building the first boat back in October.. Completely printed with ASA filament on my Ender 3 Pro. It is ready to split the hull and start working on the running gear. Nothing fancy. It is too cold to put a coat of primer on it and needs a few things done inside first. This was my first full CAD project using Fusion 360 and could still use some tweaks but it turned out well. Taught me a lot in the process but something I did over my Christmas break. It took 4 spools of filament and just over 3 weeks to print. I still need to design some interior bulkheads but they should be easy. Altogether I estimate I will have about $500 in this one. Will be using the water tight enclosure and power module from my Ohio in it. Always good to share components when possible.

It didn't take long to cut the sides with a razor saw and split the hull.

                        Hello,
I'm thoroughly impressed by your RC sub! I'm trying to print my own and purchased files from a store online but the print is pretty low quality and I'm having a freelancer fix it. He said it's kind of a mess and would be easier to start over. I'm wondering if you'd be willing to sell your STL files you used. If not, the modeler is asking me for dimensions so that he can create something as nice as yours. The only dims I can find online are for overall boat length and beam. Any help you can provide would be GREATLY appreciated. My son is a submariner and I'd like to have something printed and ready for display by Christmas if possible. Thanks again!

                          Welcome to Hobby Squawk.

Glad to have you onboard, Sir.

There are many STL files online for subs.

Also, if you have not already, check out "The RC Sub Guy" on U-toob.

Great 411 and he also has STL submarine files for sale.

I, too, have purchased a couple of sets of submarine STL files, but have not yet committed the time to print those (bucket list).

Good luck with your Christmas surprise.

I hope you'll post pictures of your build when possible.

                          Best, LB
