Do most clubs for IR battles require correct period tank models or is it common to see Panthers and Shermans fighting alongside Leopards and Challengers?

Yes and No
There theme battles that you are HIGHLY encouraged to use a tank that fits the theme. But most clubs will still let you use non themed tanks vs not letting you play. It is very rare for a club to turn someone away if they show up with a WWII for modern tank battle and vis versa with a modern tank for a WWII battle.
What most clubs want is for you to show up with a positive attitude, play honestly, respectfully and have a tank that is Tamiya protocol compatible and takes hits reliably. Nothing worst then a grumpy person and a tank not taking hits when it should.
