perhaps with a wet bristly paintbrush?

Driving around helps knock off loose bits. Other methods could be air compressor, brush, squirt bottle, etc...

Drive the tank around on the carpet in the living room and that sand will come right off.🤣 Run it some or a old tooth brush would work.
