  • Please recommend a first Tamiya tank

    Hi all,

After 10 HLs and 2 Taigens I am ready to dive into the next step of scale tank R/C. Please recommend a good starter Tamiya kit. Thanks Dai

I'd get the Sherman. Completely different suspension and tracks. Excellent starting point for post-war variants.
The more screws it takes to reassemble a tank, the more likely it is you left something out!

I have heard the Sherman is discontinued according to the AAF Tank Museum Website.

        How about these ?

Tamiya 1/16th Radio Control U.S. Airborne M551 Sheridan Tank (aaftankmuseum.com)

Tamiya 1/16th Radio Control Japanese JGSDF Type 10 Tank - Full Option Kit (aaftankmuseum.com)

I understand the Sheridan is with new up to date electronics? Dai

DO NOT get the Sheridan for your first Tamiya tank. The tracks are not very strong and require a gentle touch when driving. Not saying it is a bad tank, it is actually quite good I love mine, but not one for a first build.

The Type 10 is and solid tank that uses the same electronics as the Tamiya Abrams and shares the transmission with the Abrams and Leopard 2. It also uses a similar suspension set up as the Sheridan. The only draw back is the tracks provided with the tank. They have no rubber pads and the nylon track blocks wear down fast if driven outdoors a lot. There is a company that makes all metal Type 10 tracks with optional rubber pads should you want to upgrade at some point.

I would recommend taking a hard look at the Tamiya M26 Pershing. Great running tank, moderate skill level to build, super strong tacks, excellent gearboxes and a ton of aftermarket accessories and upgrades should you want to customize it.

That is what I am leaning to. I do not want to get something then cannot finish it. The Pershing is something I do not have in my inventory. For an average hobbyist, what is the time it takes to finish a project like this? I am an experienced static modeler who placed at National levels. Dai

This is the one at AAF. Anyone sees a better price anywhere? AAF sells for 683 USD shipped. Dai

                Best price is the AAFtankmuseum.

If you can build a static plastic model then you can build a Tamiya r/c tank. Their tanks are just like a big model kit and have really good instructions.

The time it takes is all based on you. I can build a box stock and basic painted Tamiya 1/16 tank in about 18-20 hours if I push it. Best advice is to just take you time and follow the instructions step by step and soon enough you will have a running tank.
