  • Problem with the t90

My t90 has a problem with the right track riding off the sprocket towards the outer rim. All the running gear is metal, I have checked the track tension, the suspension on the last road wheel is set to the highest setting. I have even run the vernier guage over both sides and they are so similar to be ,IMO not to be a issue. The sprockets have got the inner guide ring. I'm out of ideas,

You were close to solving the problem. The issue IS the right sprocket. It needs to be ~2mm more outboard. Not a lot but just enough to cause the issue you are seeing. Although it appears to be almost a “mirror image” of the left it is in fact slightly out of alignment with the right side suspension/road wheels.

I own four “built up” high performance T72/90 and have also built several more for other people. All of them had the same issue of loosing the RIGHT track far more then the left.

Ok how to solve the problem? It is ridiculously cheap, simple and highly effective, but I am NOT going to tell you. LOL just kidding.

First add the hull axle bearings if you have not done so yet. This will eliminate one variable of the axle wobbling needlessly.

Second but most important simply add a small rubber O-ring cut into a D shape to match the inside of the sprocket. Place it into the sprocket and re-install the sprocket onto the shaft and tighten down as normal. This will work to move the sprocket outboard and into a more correct alignment with the right side track and road wheels.

Third if your T 90 has sprockets with DUAL track retention rings remove the inner ring. The real T72 & T90 do not have the inner ring. The older T90s HL made did not have these. The second ring causes more issues then it solves especially if your tank in driven outdoors in loose dirt, sand, light mud or snow.

All simple things but you will see they make huge improvements in the overall reliability of the tank.

Thanks for that information, will give it a go today. I just wonder why the right side is different from the the left

I wondered that too, I suspect it has something to do with the scale modeling of the tank down from the real one and the difference of how the suspension engineering works. Nothing I could do about it so I came up with the above fix four years ago with my original 5.3 non adjustable idler version of the T90. It worked and has continued to work on all the subsequent T90s and T72s.

Hope you have as much luck with it as I have. If you want to see some of my T90/72 running I have several videos some in slow motion on my Instagram @ fsttanks. Feel free to take a look.
