San Diego August 28th Battle and fun run hosted by 619th Tank Battalion

W 18th St and Harrison St National City CA

You guys asked for it so we will try a fun day in the Desert Training center.
This is a very different kind of setting. Its a large vacant field of dirt, rocks and tumbleweeds with a large sand pit.
The parking is plenty but not close. We will park at the end of W 18th Steet in what is now a dead end since Harrison St is blockaded now by K rails.
We will have to walk into the playing field a short distance from our vehicles so we will not be setting up popups and tables and such. Its just too far. Leave your equipment in your car.
I expect this event to be a fun run, some test track driving, some battling around and a bit different than usual.
We will meet up about 10 am and play until we are done.

Note this site is 2 blocks north of the National City Historic Rail Road depot

There is lots of varying terrain and bushes so its not going to a lot of distance, less than at the RR depot field.

Silica is very shiny as is the feldspar goldish looking flakes in it. Jerome thought it was gold and wanted me to bring back my gold pans.

That is great terrain for it. The tanks look great. How well did the IR deal with the bright sun?

With improved IR receivers like the LegoDEI or Tamiya the range even with HL stock bulbs to “score hits” in bright SoCal noon summer sun is easily 125ft. More if the stock IR bulb has be upgraded to a HP bulb.

A short clip of a T-34 crossing "the bridge". This spot is great, with sandy tracks, hardpan, brushy clumps. It's a "test to destruction" location. I found two weaknesses on my tanks, a T-34 and a PzKpfw III, that I will now reinforce. Thanks Rich for sharing!

Bob what happened to the T34? It should have run great there .

It did run great, no problem. It's gonna be my goto tank. I love the wide footprint tracks and the large diameter wheels. Due to the aggressive running in soft sand, one suspension arm bolt started loosening up, causing the track to "make funny noises". A few turns with a hex wrench onsite and away it went. The PzKpfw's weakness was with the rear roadwheels. The wheels are in two parts just pressed together, ok for mild driving. In speedy sharp turns in soft sand though, the outside half on both sides would fall off, which caused the tracks to ride outside the rear idler. Some Zap Goo will eliminate that.

That is amazing. I have a bit over 2 acres of land in Maine, but it is mostly woods, sloping down to a river. I would be hard put to find an uninterrupted 125 ft LOS at ground level anywhere on the property!

You are all using what what diameter opening and set back for the IR bulb?
