  • The never ending Abrams build

I started building this thing in like 2014. Of course that was long before I was a member on this forum so the entire build is on RCU and other sites. I just decided to catch you guys up here.

After only 9 long years, it finally drove on its own again. I finished up the wiring tonight. I took the time to solder the power connections on the board and used a beefy power switch rated for like 20A since I'm using the 540 motors. Track tension was good, power was good, speed was decent (although a little slower than I thought it would be), and the Clark TK80 was pumping out some massive sound from that Visaton speaker. I got the faster, modern tank rotation motor installed and wired up. Battery is a 26650 Li-Ion pack I'm testing for keilau to see if it can handle the power hunger of those big motors and having so much metal she is a heavy girl. If this keeps up I may actually finish this tank this year. :haha:

Can you provide a link to your RCU build journal? Thanks!

Good battery for 1/16 scale RC tank is expensive and getting hard to find. Worse yet, many battery cells on the market have only a small fraction of the advertised capacity and do not hold the charge well (fast selfdischarge). Name brand high performance Lithium Ion cell are very expensive.

I found this EBL 26650 lithium-ion cells which allows me to build a 2S1P pack for $15 in parts and can run a red390 motor Leopard 2A6 at top speed for almost 3 hours. The pack fits a standard HL battery compartment perfectly. The catch is that this cell is a low drain device of 0.5C/1.0C spec, corresponding to 2.5A and 5A charging and discharging. The EBL cell has built-in protection PCB and is safe to use in a RC tank. What I asked @tank_me to test is whether the low drainage spec degrades the battery performance in a dynamic situation for a heavier tank in battle. I hope to hear some good news.
