In the manual for the 1/16 heng long Abrams. It says the esc is 7.4 to 12.5 volt. It doesn't say anything else about the voltage or battery. I'm wanting to see if I can run a 11.1 in the tank. Has anyone else tried running a higher voltage battery.

The Heng Long MFU ESC is optimized for 2S Lithium battery pack. The 3S battery compacts the ESC control range making the control less optimal, but the top scale speed is higher. Yes, the conclusion is drawn from trying both type of battery pack.

3S Li-PO battery pack is relatively cheap. You should try it yourself before drawing the conclusion. It is perfectly safe to use 11.1V battery.

I've never tried a 3S, I run 2S LiPo. Does the high voltage pas to the motors? Make the tank faster at full throttle?

Yes much faster but it also super heats the 380 / 390 motors and causes the MFU to shut down from heat related build up rather quickly.

The rating of 12+ on the 7.0 is a bit misleading. It's ok for short bursts but not prolonged usage at maximum throttle. Best if running a 11.1 3s (12.1-12.6v peak) is to run in Low Power mode. This limits the voltage use to 70% of the maximum remaining.

Now the 7.1 is a different story. It can handle much longer use at high voltage and higher amp draws.

lastly if you are running a 3s with stock plastic or metal gearboxes don't expect them to last to long. I would recommend upgrading to an aftermarket full metal and bearing gearbox setup.

Standard Heng Long drive motor is 380 with a gear ratio of 1:39. Dependent on the track length, it has a typical scale speed of 26 to 28 mph, typical of WW2 tanks. Modern MBT such as Abrams or the Leopard2A6 have top speed of about 45 mph. Using 390 as drive motors will get you the modern MBT speed. Besides, the 390 motor runs much cooler than the 380. No reason to use 3S battery with 380 to get the higher speed.

Thanks, I put 390’s in my larger tanks. I have a lot of 3S packs. May try it.
