  • Heng Long Abrams Upgrade Edition Plastic Drive Track Set

MotionRC has this "upgrade-version" plastic track for sale but no product description nor back side picture. My favorite track for modern MBT was the Tamiya hybrid track, but they are getting difficult to find and very expensive. Will this HL track a reasonable substitute?

It's standard track. It runs well but can stand to be a bit more durable especially if you drive in grass.

Many of my knowledge about tracks I learnt from you. One design feature that I will not compromise is the close pin design. The track material is a secondary factor. Both plastic and nickel alloy have a Modula of elasticity that the material cannot be stretched in a RC tank. The half circle plastic tab on an open pin track can be pulled to stretch easily. If the manufacturer uses softer steel pins, it makes it worse.

My real questions are on the design of this "upgrade" track. Is it single or double pin? Is it open or closed pin?

My latest RC tank acquisition is the Heng Long torsion bar V2 Abrams. I used my last Tamiya track set from inventory. I have to remove one link from the track. It looks and runs pretty good.

The Abrams I received has some broken parts. I received the replacement and am still working on it.

There are RC tank track seller who shows 8, 9 pictures of the track's front side, but no back side or side view. I steer clear of those seller too. DKLMRC.com has a metal track with rubber pad for Abrams at very good price. But they still will not ship to the US.

Before I buy, I want to be sure that the metal track or nylon track is a double pin link, no exposed pin and no hollowed back side to reduce weight.

That photo appears to be Tamiya Leopard 2 tracks. If so it works perfectly on HL Abrams sprockets. If it is Tamiya Leopard 2 track it is very good track. I run it on a number of tanks.

Sharp eyes. I purchased this set used on ebay a few years ago.

I was working on the Heng Long Leopard2A6 in 2022. Per your recommendation, I asked the AAF Museum gift shop to special order a Tamiya track set for me. It was less than $100. I always used the AAF gift shop until they close because the price is much cheaper than Tamiya US shop direct. AAF staff told me that I got the last set in Tamiya's US inventory. I grabed the used set when I saw it on ebay. I have upgraded the Leopard2A6 with the Torro metal chassis. No problem moving the Tamiya track set over.

I will be very interested in trying the DKLM metal track with rubber pad for Abrams if I can figure out a way to get it.

The Tamiya Leopard2A6 tracks run fine with the Heng Long torsion bar Abrams. I am still looking for a metal track with rubber pad for Abrams of the DKLM quality and price. Many sellers offer the Mato track, but the price is too high. I also heard rumor of the rubber pad falling off the Mato track. I am looking for advice and recommendations based on first hand experience.

I would be happy to have them sent to me in the UK, and for them to be shipped to you, if that would work?

It can work if you can air ship the track set from UK to US at reasonable cost. Thank you for your offer to help.

I did not consider the Mato track because the sellers want $165 plus $49 shipping.

Let me look into it during the week.
Have you looked at RC Tank Legion? Stanlley is in Malasiya. He sell a pair for £134. I do not know how the prices compare.
for some reason I can not post the link.

My experience with RC Tank Legion in Malysia is NOT good. I suspect that US is not in their marketing area. 2 years ago, I placed an order for some Heng Long upgrade parts and paid them by paypal. They did not ship nor answer my email for many weeks. Fortunately, I have the payment record from paypal. I was able to get the refund. Never an explanation nor apology from RC Tank Legion. Besides, £134 is expensive compared to DKLM price.

Just an FYI. DKLM Abrams track is the same track sold by Toucan on eBay, although there is also a MATO version which is similar but uses thinner pins. Stay way from the MATO version. I have several sets from both DKLM and Toucan there is no difference. Never had an issue with either suppliers Abrams tracks losing rubber pads. It's the Leopard 2 track pads that have the majority of the pad lose issues. Easy to fix just a bit time consuming.

The Toucanhobby.com offer of the Abrams track calls out the Mato name specifically. Is this the one I should stay away from? I cannot find any non-Mato version at Toucan Hobby.

It is nice to know. I may try another order some time. For now, their Abrams track price at £134 (British Pounds) is quite expensive compared to DKLM and Toucan price.

I cannot find any non-Mato version Abrams track at either the Toucan direct website or their ebay store.

It seems like I will be stuck with the Tamiya Leo track for the HL Abrams for 4 more years.

Here you go: Yes the Challenger sprockets can also utilize Abrams and Leopard 2 tracks.
