  • How much smoke oil do you add to the new smokers in HL tanks?

OK, this might be a stupid question....But I have confusion on exactly how much smoke oil to add.

I now have 6 HL tanks. 2 old, but just got 4 new ones from Motion because I got the tank bug all over again. But the smoke units are new design. Know that I DO read the instructions but am still confused...here's why.

The instructions say to add 2-3 ml of smoke oil. Just 1 ml is 20 drops! I always read elsewhere you only add 2-3 DROPS of smoke oil to a HL tank... and any more is too much. I suspected HL meant to say "drops" instead of "ml"? Every instruction manual on the new units say 2-3ml, and that sounds like too much...I suspect a text error.

Or does HL really mean 2-3 ML because their new smoke unit can handle it?

Which is it...2-3 DROPS or ML?

    Thanks in advance!!

Drops. Not ML. I think the bottles they give you are are in the 2-3 ML size so perhaps that's where the confusion lies. With these smoke units, less is definitely best!

Thanks so much for clearing it up! If you look at 3 of my instruction sheets, the diagram on the right says add 3-4 drops "to the hole of adding"....lol.

But if you look on the far left, in the text it says add 2 ml ......That's 40 drops!
So it must be an error as they contradicted themselves on the same page. So you can see the confusion I had.

"The hole of adding" 😂 Now, to work that phrase into every day conversation...

I plan to use the phrase on Valentine's Day.

This is a learning curve for me. I come from the world of O gauge trains. We are taught to prime smoke units with 15-20 drops of smoke fluid, and to add another 8-12 drops (depending on the model) when smoke production gets thin. Also we blow down the stack to clear any air bubbles. 1-2 drops seems almost insignificant considering the size of these tanks.

I know right? 3-4 drops seems too little, yet 2-3 ml seems like too much. Yet the instructions say both.
