The M8 Scott (officially the 75 mm Howitzer Motor Carriage M8) was a U.S. self-propelled howitzer used extensively during World War II. Built on the chassis of the M5 Stuart light tank, it mounted a 75 mm M2/M3 howitzer in a large open-top turret to offer close-in support to infantry and armor. It weighed over 17 tons, carried a crew of four, and could reach a top road speed of over 35 MPH with a range of about 100 miles. Armor was light; enough to protect against small arms and shell splinters but vulnerable to heavier anti-tank weapons. Ammunition load was about 45 rounds for the howitzer, plus a .50 caliber Browning M2 heavy machine gun with approximately 400 rounds available for close-in defense. It first entered service in 1942, saw action in the Italian Campaign, Normandy, and the Pacific, and postwar it was used by several other nations.
