  • Modern tank transporter.

I decided I needed a modern representation to transport tanks around. I started with a HuiNa 8x4 tipper lorry.

The plan is to use a Scania cab from Bruder, to build a representation of a Danish tank transporter.

Did a basic dry build, but using a cab from a MAN.

First job is to shorten the chassis.

The shorter chassis was glued back together and left overnight. Click image for larger version

Finally, the front track was also widened.

When you shortened the chassis did you add any reinforcement or just glue it back together ?

30mm was removed. As the cut was across the battery box, reinforcements were added inside. All I used was 1mm plastic card, glued with plastic weld, and reinforced with JB weld. This has stalled for the time being whilst I wait for the cab to arrive.

Meanwhile the MAN cab has been installed on a 6x4 chassis, which was the intention. A smaller prime mover with a tri-axle trailer. All that was required for this was some widening of the axels, and removal of some surplus mounts for the tipper body. This one will have a WPL Res 3V control, which will give proportional control, sound and a spare channel for the ramps on the trailer.

Unfortunately I am not that impressed with HuiNa. For the cost, I expect at least, proportional control and suspension, tyres provide limited traction, and due to the drive being locked, and not open differentials it tends to push on in a straight line. They represent poor value for money, compared to WPL.

Still not impressed with HuiNa. Huge lack of traction but plowing on any way. The MAN 6 x 4 has been altered, now I have better pictures, and a WPL RES 3 board installed. Click image for larger version

This now needs the tool boxes, work platforms, and winches fitted behind the cab. New rear mudguards are also required. Then it is the small matter of working out how to get working ramps on the trailer.

A Scania Cab has been obtained and has been trial installed on the 8 x 4 chassis. This now needs the tool boxes, which will be the new battery box, and air tanks fitted behind the cab. I’m undecided about duelling the rear wheels on this one. Both need plenty of weight to give them traction.
