RE: All us newbie pilots, lets share..

That seems to be the common thread between us all. I also built my fare share of Monagram 1/48 scale planes along with cars and Army vehicles. I realized my dream of flying when I grew up and joined the Air Force and flew on the KC-135A and E models for 23 of my 30 yrs in the Air Force as a boom operator. Now retired and back into rc flying I'm in heaven building and flying once again! Good flying to everyone!

Hey Boomer, great to have you aboard!!  Our little community is growing leaps and bounds.  The beauty is that we all have some experience to share and man, I've said it before and I'll say it again,
Where would I be without Motion RC!

          Hey Loneflier,

Thanks for the welcome. I'm flying a Flyzone Sensei and also a FMS 1400 Corsair V3. I'm soon going to add the FMS P-51 Dallas Darling. I can't wait for the weather to get better here in Chicago. There just isn't enough time or good weather for us flying junkies. Good flying !

            Hey Boomer,
My dad was an instructor pilot for the KC-135 for the last 5 years of his Air Force career. I used to go over to the base with him and they let me try the full scale simulator that was there. It was in a rail car at the time. That was 40 years ago and my dad is 84 now. I too always built models, especially planes. I STILL build models even though I love RC. Once I tried it a few years ago I was hooked and unfortunately for my wife, there is no going back. OOPS, gotta run, looks like the UPS guy is here again!

RE: All us newbie pilots, lets share..

Have to jump in. Absolutely incredible to have put the plastic models together and now be able to fly them. I think someone said "Too cool for words" I couldn't have put it any better myself, and I'm a talker.

I remember my first plastic model. Got it from the Osco Drug, Snap Tite I was 8. It was a ME 109. My grandpa who was a pilot for a living and flew his Harvard [see avatar, once I climbed up getting down and out was an Oh no type of proposition] to airshows every summer took one look at it and said" Messerschmitt! What the hell are you doing with that?" I didn't know any better. This is the 80's he had buddies who still had hard feelings so i get it. Needless to say the next model was a Mustang...lol...Only because they didn't have any T6's at the drug store.

                Hi Ryan,
That's a classic Harvard by the Canadian (RCAF)markings!  I uses to volunteer at the Canadian Museum of Flight in Langley, BC.  About 45 minutes out of Vancouver.  They had a doctor who reached the age where he didn't or couldn't fly his Harvard any more, so he donated it to the Museum!  Too cool!
I believe it was Revell that put out an SNJ, which is just a Texan for the Navy.  That was my first kit and I had it for years.
Hey, now there's and idea for you Ryan, if you haven't done it already. A Texan in your Grandpa's colors!!

I had all my model planes hanging from my bedroom ceiling it looked so cool, like they were all flying. UNTIL my mom decided to dust them one day and I came home from school to find them in a pile on the floor, in pieces!  By far my favorite plane of all time is the B-17. I just love the look of it. I watched 12 o'clock high on TV. I have been looking at the Freewing version and am so tempted, just a bit pricey at the moment. Maybe after the tax return!

It will happen one of these days. It's seriously on my bucket list. I wish I could get that scheme manufactured and show my Grandfather someday. It was a blessing to have been raised by my grandparents and experience aviation and the airshow community from the backseat of that Harvard. I can smell it now. Good stuff!

Yes, pretty lucky guy Ryan, did you ever get to the Abbotsford International Airshow in BC, Canada?
I think I was at the 2nd one right through to the 12th or something, used to have all the programs.
I used to dream of some day flying in a warbird and although I did in a  way, got to fly aerobatics in a Piper Cub and Got to fly in the prototype C47 as well as several DC3s,I never got a chance to fly in a fighter or bomber.  Bucket list I guess..........
By the way, Ryan, did you have a problem with the fit of the canopy/access cover on the P51B. I have a gap on the starboard side starting from about half way back and extending to the rear that I'd like to get rid of, maybe an 1/8 of an inch or slightly less at its biggest, just on the starboard side, port is nice and tight. If I was to build up the starboard side, how would I go about that?

I've seen that HK B-17, but I really think I like the look of the Freewing better. The HK seems to stand a bit too tall, and the main gear doesn't look anywhere near as impressive as the FW. Maybe I'll just stick with the 1400 warbirds for now, I would need quite a bit more runway than I have at present. Love to find an abandoned airstrip.....

This was my DC3That's me sitting, polishing rag in handThis is a good example of what yours truly did by hand, took two years to do the starboard side, by then I was a whole lot smarter a couple of months on the port side!  This is why I would love to do up a DC3 in her colors, check out the other post in product request for more pics

That is truly a labor of love to spend that many years on that gorgeous DC-3. Really nice job there G56.

Ryan-I think it is great that you are doing that AT-6 Texan. I've read a lot of positive things about this Freewing, and I am anxious to see how yours turns out with the RCAF markings. I hope you will do a video of it as well so that we can all enjoy it!
