  • RE: All us newbie pilots, lets share..

So, my first day EVER on the airbrush, I will never build another airplane without painting it, I swear!! My P51B went from thisto this in one afternoon
I'm not finished yet as the undersides have to be done.  Took the canopy piece to Ace and they scanned the color, perfect match, so then I just toned it with white and black paint.  The black is still a little heavy, but hey, gotta start somewhere!! BTW, even though you can't see it in these pictures, I found out that the real Shangrila had red wheels, so I painted them as weill

That looks great G56! Ive always liked the B Mustangs, and Shangrila had always been one of my favorite liveries.

Thanks guys, sitting here taping off the canopy in preparation for painting.  Believe it or not, its pretty easy and you just keep getting better.  Color matched the green at Ace Hardware and got a sample can which is enough to do ten planes!  They also have some  new paint in, its called Home Front Decorator colors and they come in 2 oz sizes.  I got the satin black and it is great!  To Hippie's advice and used some of my white house paint that's been sitting around and used it for lightening.  The secret is layering.  Don't go heavy on the paint, the rule of thumb is to thin it out to the consistency of milk, but sometimes, I went thinner than that, depends on how subtle you want, and you want subtle, easier to add another layer than to remove paint.

Okay, thats the upper portion done.  I've started with the grey undersides, but just couldn't resist the temptation to take her out for some pics.looks as if we had an engine fire at some time, a little tip of the hat to Pandora One. Actually I was trying to spray the silver on her and had a whoops, a little touch up with some of the other colors, instant engine fire. All warmed up, lets go! you'll note that the plastic part of the canopy now matches the fus color too.

I thought this was very appropriate for us pilots! Could be addressed to MRC I guess!
By the way, has anyone tried using a pearl escent paint for duplicating the exhaust damage on metal?

Great airbrushing G56. Looks great. I'm about ready to do a bit of painting on my Freewing P-51. Still assembling at this point and I need to repair my brush. I don't think I'll make it as dirty as the Zero, but definitely a little war torn. I'll send some photos as she goes.

I found that the needle can get clogged pretty easily and the nozzle as well, so I took them out and soaked them in IPA.  Then got into the back of the nozzle with a toothpick an loosened up anything else I could get to.  Got a bunch of adapters from Amazon and found one that fits my bigger compressor so now I have two!

My other planes are shuddering with their tails to the wall and rev their props at me whenever I come at them.  Airbrush intimidation?! :dodgy:
Oh hey, I just remembered, with the exhaust stacks on a bare aluminum plane, the exhaust stains look more "rainbow-like"
I was thinking of a clear pearl esscent paint might duplicate that, ever tried that?

Thanks for that photo, I had not thought of that effect from the exhaust. I really didn't want to fool with the Mustang, but now I've got airbrush fever. I will look on-line some too and see what real ones look like. I don't want an air show plane, I want a fighting plane!

yeah, I hear you, once you've got that spray gun, no plane is safe!  Did some gun powder residue on Big Beautiful Doll as well.  Now the interesting thing is that the bare metal P51's were not completely bare.  The wings were spray painted silver, but from what I can see, the flaps and ailerons were bare.  Also the tail was fabric so it was painted as well

                            GMAN!

Looks great, really improved the look of the plane! Like I've said before its the way to go!

I've been using Tamiya paints, and for the exhaust I've been using black and then go over it with some earth brown, adds a little bit of depth to it.

Here's a 1:48 scale model I finished today, you can see on the exhaust a subtle change in color with the brown. It's more prevalent on my FMS 190 but I don't have a good shot of it now.

I was planning on getting the FMS JU 87 as my next plane, but I'm really considering the Freewing SBD Dauntless just to paint it a Pre-War/Yellow wing scheme!

Hey, that looks great SOB!  Thanks for the tip, I hadn't thought of that.  See this is why we need an airbrushing section.  Aros says he's chicking into it.

I managed to get a flight in this morning before the wind came up.  Pandora-2 went up for the first time in a while and the first time with the DX8 in charge.  A bit of trimming and she was fine. Dang roads are a pain though as they slant to the outside and naturally the plane drifts that way.  Second flight, she headed for the curb before I could correct it, the curb took care of the prop.  the darned landing gear pants did there thing and charged me another $18 for new ones.  Undaunted, I brought her home, stripped off the pants. plugged the LG back in and a new prop and she's ready to go again, just waiting for the wind to lay off.  Did some tail wheel adjusting in the basement, hopefully that will help out too.  I;m grateful for the fact that you can adjust the tail wheel independently, comes in handy.

                                      Hey G56,

Glad you at least had a chance to do some flying today. I am sorry to hear about the curb damage though. At least it wasn't too bad and you are able to get back into the air again.

I should have gone out this morning since the winds were down, but had a couple of other things to take care of this morning. Anyway, winds are now very strong out of the west, at least 13-15mph, and we are getting winter storm watches up now. Can you believe it? Here we are in Alabama, and they are talking about possibly 4" of snow on Monday. Not much by you Northern guy's standards, but very unusual for here. Maybe the wind will die down and I can put some skis on the planes and fly off the snow! :D
