  • RE: All us newbie pilots, lets share..

Well, the temp broke 45 yesterday so I decided it was long enough.....time to fly! I charged up 3 lipos, took down to old, trusty Hobbyzone Supercub, packed up the radio, and headed out. 5 minutes down the road, it started to rain! Turned around, came back home, put everything away.
A great day of "not" flying. Oh well, it can only get better from here. Don't laugh about using the Supercub when I've got my new Zero and Mustang hanging in the cave. I need to brush up, and limber up the thumbs after a long winter.
    Addicted to planes!

I've been a drone flyer for over 2 years now. I like to record a lot of aerial video or fly in FPV mode or autopilot my system with GPS and waypoints and it's been great not always needing a large space to fly I even fly indoors there is real freedom when flying a drone. But it does not compare to a "JET". I recently purchased a mini 3 channel F-22 put it together and took it to the park.

      OMG!!!

This was so much fun. Watching my F-22 do a super fast flyby's inverted then get into a vertical climb while spinning I'm super hooked. Yes I crashed and it sheared off the tail 3 mins into my flight but luckily it broke right at the glue joint... glued it and back on while my battery was charging and for a 2nd time I had her back in the air...

It was an awesome 1st experience with flying a jet.

I can't wait till I scale up those 90mm but they may not be big enough for me now  :)

And my F-22 is looking very lonely I want to build a fleet of jets to keep her company... F-15, F-16, F-18, F-35
Hi Brent and welcome! I did the same thing.... Multirotors, FPV, and still do but the planes have been a blast!! Glad you're having fun!!

Hi Brent and welcome to the forum, a great bunch of guys and gals here to help you out!

Well, as some of you know, My Freewing P51 arrived Thursday and he paint and Callie Graphics decals came Friday, so you can guess what I've been up to.  Transforming her from "IronAss" to "Old Crow", I won't go into the politics of not buying the new FW Old Crow, if you want to know, read about it elsewhere in the forum.
Anyway, as you may or may not know, Iron Ass has a big red nose that had to go.  Thanks to Flygirl for the paint recommendation.  She told me about Delta Creative Ceramcoat Metallic Silver.  A thick acrylic paint that matches the stock silver on the plane almost to a tee.  Now, getting it thin enough to blast through an airbrush is a challenge, but can be done.  Another paint I tried was Sargent Art Metallic silver, a little darker and a great paint as well, not quite as thick and therefore easier to thin out for the airbrush.  So the red nose is gone and thanks to Ace hardware, I got a perfect match for the antiglare shield, a sample size for a buck, you can't beat that!
So the invasion stripes are on the bottom wing and they turned out well too.  I have noticed that paint does not peel off the Mustang, which is a real plus.  One problem I ran across was that the upper black stripe was not in the right position, so I had to move it out about 3/8 inches.
Ever wonder how to paint a stripe around your spinner? This question stumped me as I tried taping it off but it looked terrible.  Then, the light went on, a couple of flat elastic bands!!!
As you can see it works great!!
So a bit more work to do with the airbrush to reset those upper stripes, then into the decal placement tomorrow, once that's done its Minwax time!  I have Monday off as well, so lots of time to get her done!!
Can't wait to fire up the sound system, wonder if I should warn the neighbors??

        Grossman56
By the way, thinking of calling her "Faux Crow"

Up at the crack of dawn (John Wayne's line in The Cowboys,"We're burning daylight" and its still pitch dark)
Making headway, the only thing left on the fuse is the stripes below the insignia, other than that, she's ready for decals

She's looking really good.  I have so much green paint that I did some inside work in the battery compartment as well.
Have a couple of coats of silver drying on the upper part of the wing as I had to move the black line over.  I found that with Ceramcoat Silver, you really have to thin it out, even a little thinner than milk, so your coverage, when going over another color, takes a few passes.  I also used the Sargent brand silver around the exhaust stacks to create that stainless steel look, and, of course, painted the exhaust stacks with Humbrol rust color and the exhaust covers with Testors Model Master Chrome paint.  Comes across every realistic!

Those exhaust stacks look great! Looks like they have been hot many, many times! I finally get a day to fly today. Winds down, chilly at 48 deg but sunny and clear. Taking the P-51, Pandora, and Seagull.... Was gonna maiden the RV Jet but that's so complicated with all the autopilot stuff that I want a warm day to play with that beast. :)

well, all the main decals are on and she looks great :D

After this, I tip my hat to the people who install nose decals at the factory, its a real wrestling job!! I had to put pressure on each individual square to get it down flush with a minimum amount of air(preferably none!) but there she is.
Taking a break for awhile, assembly later my friends!!

BTW, I did get to fly today thankfully... Flew the Pandora 3 flights and Furious Frankie one... Broke a retract door though. I kind clumped it when landing and it caught the grass. Oh well... :)

A couple of things to do tomorrow, calibrate the sound system and Minwax!
One thing I've noticed right off the bat is that the Starboard main landing gear angles outward, making her dog track while taxiing. Is there a way you can align the landing gear?  Otherwise she drags to the right on taxi, so take off won't be fun.  Think I'll have to pull the strut?

Hey, who's that old guy with my plane, oh wait its me?  Dang when did that happen? Got carried away with the invasion stripes and the cat got in the way!

                              Grossman,

She looks great!  As far as the landing gear issue.  I have done some tweaking on mine on occasion. First thing I would do, is check to see if the grub set screw and landing gear connecting rod is set properly.  Maybe the factory tightened the set screw on the landing gear rod out of proper position, a little off on the flat spot of the rod. I would tell you to check the landing gear support arm for alignment, but you haven't even flown it to be tweaked a little off alignment. You will have to unscrew the 4 screws of the retract to check, but no big deal.  You'll see the grub screws, one on each side. Loosen each one, align to proper angle, maybe it will secure with proper alignment then. Check the other end of the landing gear rod too, if that isn't the problem.

                              Good luck,
                              Lon

Fairing doors....They will sag open a little bit when not powered on...But should close tight when powered up. Yeh, maybe a little adjusting there. Remember when doing adjustments and powering up the plane, remove the prop first!!!! That's what I was doing last month when I got my hand all cut up, working on the fairing doors..adjusting.

Yes, I hear you, since your incident/accident I've gone through every plane and have the mix switch on the DX8 set for throttle inhibit. One more safety barrier between me and the Doc.
I make sure that switch is down before plugging in the battery, then run my control checks before engaging the engine.  When I land and taxi up, throttle goes of and the switch does to, then advance throttle just to make sure, I'm not going near the business end without the kill switch.
Good tip about the fairing doors, just like the real ones, they sag without power....interesting.

Man that's one fine looking piece of art. We had a strut on a v7 fms that had the flat on the strut off a little not sure how it got done but a little dremmel work and it was good to go.

Worked on it last night .  Took the strut right off and the piece that comes out of the motor/base that the grubs anchor to, it twists slightly.  Couldn't get inside that piece because one of the screws was crossthreaded and I couldn't get it to back out.  Got it to tighten up by pushing it inward with a pair of pliers.  Still twists , but the alignment is better.  Taxied her around again and definitely better, it sure looks awesome in the dark with all the lights, those landing lights are blinding!

Great plane, it won't take off in ten feet, go almost unlimited vertical and almost hover, but then if I wanted that I'd have bought an F105D and called it Old Crow II as Bud did in Vietnam.
