Hi guys and gals!  Well, here we are in Shawano, Wisconsin! A two day drive from home and it rained pretty well all the way.  We had our first get together with Dave Scott today and I must say that I'm already impressed.  We went over fundementals today, and since it was raining, did some sim work as well.  Near one o'clock the weather started clearing up, so we went out to the field, the wind was still up but we had a chance to see everything and get all set for flying tomorrow at nine.
So much information, broken down into managable chunks and presented in such a great way that anyone can understand.   Clearing away some myths, like crashing is just part of learning, paying your dues.  Imagine if they said that to you when you were learning to drive, or fly full scale!
Flying is based on telling the airplane what to do and not let it dictate what to do.
Just amazing, and so much simpler than you can imagine.  Anyone out there contemplating this course, go for it.

very strange, I post, but it doesn't come up on the screen. But if I go to the reply screen, it shows up down below the screen, whats up?
Anyway, looks like this one is posting. Well here we are in Shawano, Wisconsin for Dave Scott's "One Week to Solo" course, we had ground school today and man it was great! A lot of information on 'how to' and why , traditionally, things are considered part of 'paying your dues'. I didn't realize what a fundamental radio input a simple 'bank, neutral, pull, neutral, reverse bank, neutral' method of turning could be and how hitting that neutral point every time is critical to the performance of a smooth maneuver. Anyone considering this course, its is WELL worth the time, effort and money, and we still have four more days to go

Glad your having fun and learning Gman. I didn't realize there were courses offered like that. Trying to teach yourself with no professional input can be a little frustrating.
You should have picked me up on your way thru Iowa! Lol

I hear your Jeff, and you're even closer to Shawano than I am!  Yeah its great, now I have four days of flying to look forward to.  Dave offers courses in all levels of aerobatics as well.  Think I'll be back next year.  I am self taught but knew that with some proper training, I'd be light years ahead of where I am.  If you're like me and have been flying out of school grounds or side streets, his field is enough to blow you away!
Well, the sun is up and its time to grab some breakfast and get ready.
Diane is still nervous but did well in groundschool yesterday and I have no doubt, I'm creating a monster here.  She catches on to things so fast but still has a fear of crashing.  Today is the day she'll overcome that and then watch out.

                • RE: All us newbie pilots, lets share..

Hi guys and gals, just taking a break between rain showers here.  Got quite a bit of flight time in so far today and we're going to try again around five.  Man I did some much improved flying.
The part about lining up on landmarks and doing level turns improved my flying like you wouldn't believe.  Diane?  Well, she's never flown before today.  Now she's got about 45 min of flying under her belt and know what?  No crashing, so much for the paying your dues theory!
Now, for another theory, three mistakes of altitude.  If you know how to fly right, why do you need the altitude? the mindset is that you're going to make mistakes in the first place.  You can't with Dave!!!
We we're flying at an average altitude of maybe twenty to twenty five feet?!
Very seldom did Dave take control of the plane, and that is with two people who have never flown before and two of us that have minimal experience.  And, by the way, not with some dog of a trainer either.  Every once in a while, Dave will demonstrate what you can do with this plane, just amazing!
I did a good base leg a level turn to the field, nicely lined up with the runway because I used my landmark reference to ensure that I was lined up with the runway. I'm making a gradual descent and as I approached the runway, Dave, matter-of-factly told me to cut the throttle to idle, and in she came, I made one bounce, which was my mistake as I didn't raise the nose slightly, she bounced slightly, so I eased the stick back slightly and she settled right in.  Throughout the whole base leg to cutting the engine to idle, I wasn't even thinking of landing, it was an 'oh, by the way, lets land' throttle back and she's on the ground before I even realized I'd landed.  And without the whole 'ok, now I gotta land' brain thing, I made a great landing!

Go figure!  It is that easy when you have Dave training you.

Hey G56-I am sooooo jealous that you are getting to do all that flying and having so much fun. That really sounds like a fantastic course you and your wife are taking. Wish it was a bit closer to good old Dixie though. Hopefully when you return, you can teach some of us old dogs some new tricks too! Enjoy!!

If you can't attend the flight school, the 'One Week To Solo' flight instruction manual is a great investment.
Dave has a new article coming out in the AMA magazine that we all get as well, here's a link to his website, you can get the manual from there.

                                  Hi guys and gals!
What a great day!  The weather was perfect with a gentle breeze blowing right down the runway!
After yesterday when we, a bunch of newbies, were flying in a 20 mph cross wind, shooting landings!

So today should be a red letter day, right? Wrong, it took us a couple of turns to get used to the lack of a crosswind!  Imagine that!  We want the wind!

So we were concentrating on takeoffs and landings, getting right into pattern doing flat turns, lining up with the runway and landing.  It was great.
My friend Brad and my wife Diane, who had never flown before in the lives, had some flat moments, but eventually had the aha moment about control inputs.  We all know how hard it is when the plane is coming at you, to realize that left input is right direction change and vice versa.
But they're getting it.  My wife, who has only maybe two hours total flight time in her life, is shooting successful landings without putting so much as a dent in the airplane.  Last week she'd have told you she has no technique, now she's talking about refining her technique!  Now there's a change in your mindset!
The highlight of my day was doing the preflight check out on the P51B.  Here's a tidbit.  Before taking off into the wild and unforgiving blue, why don't you taxi her around for a for a few minutes?  All the ant hills and stones and dandelions etc will rattle your plane around more than anything in the air will, so if anything is going to be rattled loose, it happens on the ground.  Taxi her over and check it out again.

Up she went, Dave flew her around, gear down and half throttle at the most and felt her out, taking note on some of the minor changes we'd have to make.  Landed her so pretty it was enough to bring a tear to your eye.  A perfect scale like landing.

So I'm going to do the adjustments and we'll hook her up to the buddy box system and I get to fly her tomorrow!

Made my day just to see one of MY Mustangs in the air and flying so pretty!!

                                  Stay tuned for more

                                        Graduation Day!

Man, you shoulda been there!  Diane hit a plateau on the learning curve yesterday but made up for it in spades.  We got introduced to an E Flite Apprentice, pretty cool trainer with a gyro system built in and three levels of experience.  On the novice setting, its just like steering a car, just hold the stick over 'til she completes her turn.  In the next level you fly with aileron input and pull back on the elevator, but the gyro is still there.  The final level and she flies with normal inputs and no gyro.  Diane says it knocked the apprehension right out of her because it was so easy.
Then when she got back on to Dave's Low and Slow (Ol' Oily) she did great, hit her marks, level turns nice landing approachs and a great landing.  All this from a girl that less than a week ago had never flown in real life and was frustrated with the sim because she kept on crashing!

So, about 4 hours under her belt and no damage to the airplane, how many of us can say that?  We have the buddy box system at home (everyone does if you have two radios and the wire) and we're going to fly the Pandoras that way until she is fully confident, which will probably means that I'll be standing for long lengths of time doing nothing but watching her fly, but eventually she'll cut me free.

"So what about the Mustang Dan?", you ask.
Burned through my three batteries, shot three  or four landings, no problem, one time she tried to tip a wing up but I was ready for that and just gave her a little left aileron and brought her down beautifully.  My last landing was a thing of beauty, just kissed the runway.  Went to give her full elevator to keep the tail down and she took off again.  What happened was that I was so used to lining up for a landing and then idling the engine, using elevator to extend my flight, then touching down on a point of the runway with the low and slow, that I forgot that I'm leaving a sizable chunk of throttle in when landing the Mustang to avoid the tip stall.  So I landed sweetly, but forgot to immediately kill the engine.  So I happily bounced back into the air.  Since I was pretty well out of runway, Dave took over and brought her back down.  Now what I would have done if I'd had enough runway, is to ease back the elevator, settle her back on the runway and chopped throttle.
The main thing, to me, is that I knew what I'd done wrong and it won't happen again.
Man, I'll tell you, she might not be fast to a lot of you out there, but she's got plenty of pep for me, but she's set up now to fly just like a fast Pandora, the thought being, set the plane up to fly the way you want it to fly, not to deal with her quirks.

And finally, the 1st U.S. R/C Flight School is hands down, THE smartest investment I've made since getting into this hobby!
Man, the lessons I've learned in this class in five days has improved my flying exponentially!!  Can't wait to get home and put it into practice,
Mr. Dave Scott is patience personified, really.  Anyone of any skill level is going to benefit from his teaching and guidance.  His course should be a must on your list, this isn't even a question in my mind.  I've looked forward to this course, as you all who've read my thread know, for almost a year, and it did not disappoint!
I'm signing up for the aerobatics course for next year as soon as I get home.
Will post pictures then as well as this laptop is giving me some trouble, so we're off to a celebratory dinner tonight and then we're heading home early Saturday morning.
Give it some real consideration, tired of radio interference, brown outs, equipment failures.  Or my favorite in the review of the FMS 1400 Pitts on the MotionRC  website, 'she likes to bounce on landings', no, you don't know to hold in some elevator when she lands to stop it from bouncing.
