  • RE: All us newbie pilots, lets share..

    Greetings Roy,

Indeed, what matters is that we fly and have fun doing it.

    It doesn't matter how!!

I learned using my thumbs. I have tried several times to change over to thumb/finger. I just can't get comfortable with it. Doc

        Hello Rocketeer!

That's right. There's no right or wrong way as long as we are all flying safe and having fun doing it.

Ordered the wife an E Flite Apprentice, now she'll have her own to start with.  From what I can see, its the ideal trainer, wish I'd have got one to start with.
The HobbyZone Sportsman looks to be a great new plane as well
          http://www.motionrc.com/hobbyzone-sp...ceted_search=0
But we opted for a little more wingspan and weight, plus a couple of extra batteries for the same price.  Don't get me wrong, both are great planes and the Sportsman really impressed me, but its her plane, so.............
Try getting used to saying that!!

            Greetings GMan,

Boy, I wish I had known you were in the market for an Apprentice.
I have one up for sale, an RTF brand new still in the box.
Bummer! Could have made you a heck of a deal.

I also have an E-Flite Carbon Z Cub BNF up for sale as well.
Brand new still in the box with AS3X.
Let me know if you ever want to go in that direction.

              Dang Bill!
I'll keep my eyes open for anyone else in the market.  One of the guys I took the course with was into getting one, he'd need the whole kit, I just got Diane the BNF version as I have more than enough transmitters. I'll e mail him and see.

Here's an interesting question, how many MotionRC "thanks" order stickers do you have?
I was curious as I kept all mine in the back of my binder and for the fun of it, counted them up.  I'm up to 36 now, anyone else?

No Problem. The shipping might have been a killer anyway.

As far as the Thank You stickers go, I stopped counting after it became the encyclopedia-receiptica!!

Had a fly in today at the Cody field, first time to meet up with some of the guys, had a great time.  Found people from all skill levels, very cool . Next week we have a work party arranged to fill in the cracks and get rid of the weeds growing in the expansion cracks

This isn't about MRC products, but hey! I've spent a LOT of cash with them, and will continue. My brother picked up an unused Magnum .91 4 stroke engine for $50 at a garge sale and gave it to me! Boy has this opened a can of worms! I fly only electric and am mostly clueless about nitro. Well...it has to have an airframe, after all! My WONDERFUL wife just bought a Great Planes Super Skybolt ARF bipe for my birthday!!! The perfect airframe for the perfect power plant. Now, for all the stuff that goes with nitro. What have I gotten myself into?!!! Doc

I used to fly nitro 30+ years ago and we had a nitro boat 10+ years ago I'm sure they have better stuff out there now. Then it was a hassle starters glow heater batteries fuel pumps and cleaning everything up guess I got lazy but it just wasn't worth the hassle for me. They're are a lot of folks who really enjoy them and I still enjoy watching them especially the large scale war birds. I hope you really enjoy it and have loads of fun with them its a whole different realm of the flying experience.

Poor Ken, it took three of us to load the remains of the fuse into his trailer.  Apparently, you can order the fuselage already assembled for around $900 with a 90 day wait, I believe from China.  Jeff, the other big plane owner was saying something about that.  In any case, he has a big project ahead of him.  The wings and tail feathers came through it in good shape, the L/G came away in great shape so there's something to be said there.  Sad though, as there is so much invested in these big birds, but when it hits the ground, its only balsa.  Think I'll stick to foam.  Had an incident with Pandora 2, had a rudder servo go on her, just shortly after Pandora 1 had the same thing.  Anyway, got the new one in and she wouldn't steer worth a dang, so I decided to do some surgery. I cut the plastic piece (that the tail wheel assembly bolts to) off the fuselage to get at the shaft that the landing gear attaches to.  Turns out that there is a round attachment with two grub screws, you know the kind I mean, the little cylinders that the rods slide into.  Anyway, the one grub screw, which we're all familiar with, holds the tail wheel on, the second grub screw holds a rod that slides up a plastic shaft and sticks out just far enough so a second, top attachment can fit onto it, which, surprise, surprise, is held on with a grub screw.  Of course the rods have a flat spot that you line up with the grub screw.  In my case, when taxiing, if one could call it that she would pirouette around like that Lockheed Electra in the movie 1941.  The tail wheel had a mind of its own.  You could hold the top of the assembly and there was a lot of play on the wheel, so I realigned everything and tightened the you-know-what out of it, then out with the Foam Tack and glued the whole thing back on.  Hoping this will solve the problem, have to wait until tomorrow to let the Foam Tack set up.  Its a little drastic, but I couldn't fly her like that, so no choice.
On to the Old Crow.  I was getting this bird ready for flight and ran across the old gear trouble again.  One side will not retract.  I thought I had this licked but now its starting to do it again, so I'm waiting for MRC to get some Freewing stock in to pick up another retract.  Maddening as she hasn't flown yet.  I had her out for taxi trials, to shake anything loose that may want to come loose.  Better on the ground than in the air.
Don't think Motion really likes me, so I'm not going to bother with trying to get a free replacement.
So that's me up to date.  Shangrila is ready to go.  Have a set of Sean's retract braces to go into Big Beautiful Doll, then she's ready.  The Waco tried to shed her top wing, but she's not getting away that easy, she's ready to go again.  The E Flite Apprentice is on its way, so I'll have some assembly time there and I keep waiting for the FMS Pitts to come in stock again.

There's nothing like the smell of nitro exhaust in the morning!  I LOVE IT!  You see, I come from all nitro and have only recently gotten into electric!  It works both ways you know: I had to learn about things like LIPO's, maH, 3 cell, 4 cell, 5 cell, 6 cell (or is it "3S, 4S, 5S, 6S"?), ESC, BEC, Kva, and then acquire the right chargers and understand what 1C vs 3C means!  Then, what the heck: Deans connectors, EC3 connectors, JST connectors?  Plus storage charge, discharge, full charge, etc.  I still love my nitros, but I've figured out electric okay.  Now, I've got my first gas bird, so onto another whole new learning experience!  That's what makes this hobby so much fun...and so darn expensive!  Good luck!
Any day you can fly is a good day!  :D

And , of course, as soon as I order my Pitts, the retracts for the FW P51 come in stock so I order those and pay the shipping, my timing really sucks sometimes, oh well.
E mailed Motion as regards the retract situation on the Mustang but haven't heard back, so I just went ahead and ordered two.  We'll see how that progresses.  I'm off to the field this morning as we're having a work Bee there today to patch up the runway and trim off some of the 'grass'.  Sure going to be nice to have a real field this close to home.  Amazing how things work out.
Got Diane's Apprentice built last night and I bound the DX4e that came with the Weed Wacker to it, seems the most basic radio to use for her. Probably will get it in the air today or tomorrow.  It looks like a pretty cool airplane and those outer wing 'extensions'(?) are pretty cool too, no stalling there!
Hope its a great weekend for all.  Once the work is done, I'd like to get Pandora 2 in the air after her tail surgery and her patching up, she's as good as new.  Then tomorrow in Mustang day!!
