  • RE: All us newbie pilots, lets share..

Well, had one of the daughters and my grand daughter over for the weekend.  Managed to sneak out in the early AM and got some flight time in.
You'll all be happy to know that after waiting for over a year, Big Beautiful Doll finally took to the air!!!!!

She flew like a dream, until I discovered that I was maxed out on my up elevator trim!  How that happened, I couldn't tell you, but there it was, and I didn't catch it on preflight, dang!!
She wasn't far out of trim but I had to land it a little hotter than I wanted to.  So I get her lined up and coming down, she touched wheels and suddenly, the right wheel leaves the plane!
I'm seeing Sean's situation!! the hub comes apart and the two pieces go one way and the rubber another.  Both were recovered, thank God!
So, thinking quickly, I give her some left aileron to keep the wing up and head it for the grass on the side of the runway, she ground loops and that's it.  I'm thinking of the damage of course as I go to retrieve her.  Hey, let me tell you right now, if you have an FMS Mustang and don't have Sean's retract reinforcements in them, your crazy!  That bird had NO damage on her, short of the back pin on the landing gear door broke off.  A little scuffing on the bottom of the strut and that was it, I couldn't believe it, no broken plastic pieces on the retract mechanism, nothing.  Now, just to prove a point, when I got her back home and on the bench, I noticed that the retract was not quite lining up true with the gear compartment, so I took the gear completely apart.  Turns out that the pin that joins the retract mechanism to the gear itself was bent!  She hit that hard and no damage to the retract!  Out with a hammer and down on the concrete and bent her back to shape, good as new.  Trimmed off a small diameter nail and glued it to the top of the gear door and she slipped into the slot no problem.

So, of course, I corrected the trim problem as well so now I have lots of play on her.  One more thing to go onto the preflight list.
Oh, by the way, it was the c clip that came loose even though I thought I had them on when I checked them after Sean's mishap.  Got some new ones at Ace Hardware, the size is a 5/32 Hillman E clip and it is tight!

On another note, the Pitts is here!!
I was actually home for the delivery, first time for me!!!
So, all the decals are off and the white paint is on.  Man, does it make a difference, without the white paint, it looks kind of grey, and besides the white covers up pretty well all the foam circle marks.  Ran some filler down the center joints on the top of the fuse and applied the first coat of Minwax to her.  Haven't began to build as I'm thinking it will be easier to apply the decals before.  At least it was for Old Crow.  What a cool bird, it looks so much bigger than it actually is due to the scale, the pilot is huge! and is the fuse ever wide, the bay is cavernous.  I dropped the battery in and bound the receiver and there' still a ton of space, sound system??!!
Speaking of the battery, this thing is heavy a 3300 6 cell.  The bird itself is not what you'd call light, then throw this battery in and just that, with no wings or tail on, and she outweighs anything else in the fleet!
Length and width wise, she's about the same as the Pandora, but the fuse is much wider.  All in all a very impressive airplane that isn't going to be bothered too much by the Cody breeze.
I'll post some pictures later as she gets built.  If you want one, better scoop it up quick, this could be the last kick at the cat.

Well, I've said enough, take it easy boys  and I hope everyone's flying is successful, enjoy!

      Greetings GMan,

Thanks for the update on the Pitts.

I'm looking forward to the photos.

When a friend of mine gets back from Nebraska later this week he is going to by my Carbon Z.
I'll probably use those funds to pick up the Pitts.

Of course for almost the same amount, I could replace my Turbo Jet AND pick up the Flyzone Select Scale Beaver which I've had my eye on.
I'd also like another 1400mm T-28 in Silver........

      Decisions, Decisions.......

      Take care, buddy

Gman I'm glad to hear your getting time flying now instead that Waco driving you crazy . I see a new joy in reading your post since you went to the class.

Rktr if I never buy another T Jet I'll be a happy man . I have had nothing but issues . It's one of those I am not suppose to fly . If it's not folding wings it's not dropping one of the gear on landing . Happened again today and between the handstand it did and the  flight it took  from my hand to the bed of my truck , well lets just say there will not be any issues from it again .

Will be quite some time before the Hippie has ANY EDF delivered to my address !!! You need spare parts , just say the word I have two planes worth .

          Greetings Hippie,

So, your Turbo Jetting days have come to an end, huh?

Bummer! Up until my aileron mishap I hadn't had any issues and I had about 30 flights on it.
It was a really great flyer. I think I would get another one someday but for right now it's a 'been there, done that' thing.

Got my eye on a couple of other gems........ Like the Flyzone Select Scale Beaver w/floats......

          Hang tuff my friend.

I have always liked the Beaver ! Wish I could tell you how many times I almost pulled the trigger on that on . If you do keep me up on it , all the info I 've ever read or seen was positive .

              Hey Guys

Sorry to hear of your troubles with the Turbo jet. I had my eye on that one a while back. Its still on the list, but its towards the bottom.
I'll vouch for the Flyzone Beaver tho. Love that plane. I crashed it in the lake about a week ago (pilot error) and ordered another one. By the time the new one arrived, I had the original one fixed. Now I have two! One with floats and one with the tundra tires. I see no problem with that, Right? Lol

Just be aware when flying with floats. It takes more rudder input to fly scale. GET one (or two) You wont be disappointed

                Agreed.....

I had the opportunity to maiden a friend's for him last weekend and all I could think was, WOW!
Immediately I knew I had to have that plane!!

What a gorgeous, scale flying plane it is!!

I totally understand the desire for two.

                    Greetings H64,

I'm not actually buying anything at the moment.
I have an E-flite Apprentice RTF  w/SAFE that's brand new, never even opened the box.

I'm trying to do a straight up trade with my LHS for the Beaver.........
                    He hasn't decided yet.
It's a good fair as they both list for the same price.

And now for the Pitts (maybe a pun intended)
Spread out over the table with a coat of white paint on her, all the decals stripped off.  They tend to peel some of the foam with them, but foam tack filler to the rescue

                      The scale is huge
She's definitely the tallest bird in the fleet
                      Compared to BBD
                      And the Waco
The power plant, the same as in the 1700 scale warbirds so she should zip right along
As I mentioned, she's no light weight and her height is intimidating, but really she's very close to the Pandora in wingspan and fuse length.
Just waiting for Callie graphics to get here and then match the paint up to them, a nice Navy blue, the scheme is like this

                        Very Nice Grossman56,

I am anxious to see how she turns out and what your thoughts are on the first several flights. This is another one I would love to own, but so far have resisted 6 cell planes due to the expense of the batteries. But my resolve is weakening as more and more 6 cell planes are coming out and getting my interest up! Best of luck to you, I am sure it will look great!Keep us posted.

                          I hear you man.
                          I just can't justify $100+ for 1 battery.
I currently have 2 - 5000 mAh 6-cells but only because I got them in like new condition but used at a swap meet.

                          But, it is getting harder.
Today I was reading that a certain vendor who is close to releasing a 6-cell version of the A1 Sky Raider is also re-releasing this month the 6-cell twin 70mm EDF A-10 !!

They truly know how to hit a guy where it hurts......

                          I must remain strong....

I picked up 3x3300 6s with the airplane at $60 per.  Just to try her out on, this way at least I have three batteries so I can get some good time at the field.  I thought I'd start out at that and see how they do, I'm not hot rodding around the first few flights anyway and I'll see how long the batteries last, you'd think with 6 cells the darned thing would fly for an hour!  I'll give her three minutes the first flight and see where I end up.  I hear you about the batteries, I'd have preferred the 4000 pro, but pretty darned pricey.  Mind you if I'd just stop buying planes, I could afford the odd battery, hmm, what a concept...............Someone slap me!!!!!!!!

I do know some guys in our club that run 2 - 3 cell in series and that seems to work pretty well.

I'd go that route before the $100 a pop alternative.

Decals are here but what a job to match the paint up to.  The scanner said they were black, but they're flag (insignia blue).

Fortunately, Callie Graphics sent me enough stock blue so I could cut the panels out of it.  Looks pretty good after many long hours.  Just the upper wing decal was 40 inches plus long so it was a challenge as the wings duplicate the fabric-on-wooden-spars look.  Anyway, the end is near, just letting the paint set up again before going at it once more.  Pictures on the way.

Wing Decal, yes it was one piece, and a lot of time!

Side lettering was all one piece and the rest of the blue is done with various pieces cut out from decal stock supplied by, none other than Callie Graphics
Working with stock pieces was a little intimidating at first, but I got better as I went along

                                          The Cavernous bay
And of course the Grossman luck held up, maybe I should say Murphie's Law, the elevator servo is dead.  Frozen up, to be exact, tried it through my GT servo tester and nothing. took it out of the plane and it doesn't move at all manually, so, got a ticket in with MotionRC.  We'll see what happens.....
