  • RE: All us newbie pilots, lets share..

    Hey Grossman,
Had a issue with the gear on my FMS 1400 Corsair today. First flight with the new upgrade gear and it collapsed on landing. Broke the tail gear and some minor stuffing but otherwise ok. Got a ticket in with MRC we'll see what happens. Time to get the Waco out. Good flying.

Good luck with that Roy, Motion seems to be pretty darned good with customer service to everyone else.  I may have just been the one who fell through the cracks.  I give them full credit regarding the servo on the Pitts.  There was no hesitation in sending me out another.  I'll be getting ahold of Martin, hopefully sometime next week ans see if I can resolve the other past issues.
The weather is flip flopping here today and the wind is already up at 8:00 in the morning, which doesn't bode well.  So flying is shaky at best.  So I think I'll take Diane over to the school yard and let her taxi the Apprentice around.  She hasn't had any real taxi time and I thought it might help to 'fly' the pattern on the ground.
By the way, anyone checked this out? Found it in Model Airplane News, too cool!

        Hey guys:
Tom got a hold of me and he's also going to see what's up!
We'll see what happens, but its sure nice to see the difference all of a sudden, I'm starting to feel the love again!
        I got this from Tom:

        Hi Dan,

FMS changed servo manufacturers mid stream which is causing loads of problems. They changed directions of servos, spline size, speed of the servos, etc. It is likely you received one new flap servo and one old flaps servo. Unfortunately FMS did not change the part numbers when they changed the servos so we have multiple different parts with the same part number and no ability to know which is which. I wish they would have changed the part number when they changed the servo. At any rate, please send an email to support@motionrc.com which will create a ticket. Please enter "attention Tom" in the subject line and indicate you talked with me via PM in the first sentence of the email. Please indicate what parts on what orders should have been warranty items. If you don't have the order numbers, we can look it up. Just send a list and I'll make sure it is taken care of. Please note I'm off tomorrow (Tuesday) for a family reunion but will be back on Wednesday. If anyone other than me replies to the ticket created at support@motionrc.com (which is possible since I will not be here) and you get an unsatisfactory response, please send me another PM with the ticket number which was created in our support system and I will be sure it is taken care of. Again, I will likely miss the email since I will be out tomorrow.

          Greetings GMan,

Careful with "starting to feel the love again"!!

You'll have to redo the Pitts to say Motion RC!!!    :D

Seriously though, I'm glad to see things coming around.

          Best of luck buddy.......

            Hey G Man,

Got an answer on the collapsed gear on my 1400 Corsair from Motion today. Being it's out of warranty period there's nothing they can do for me. I understand their position but it's kind of crappy that FMS touts their new upgrade gear as "won't collapse" and what do you know first flight out and the right gear collapses. Not what I call good QC. Then there's the fact you can only buy them in pairs at 54.00. Not going to happen for awhile. Maybe I'll put the old gear back in,at least when they collapse as they were prone to do I won't be surprised. Well time to order the Dallas Darling P 51b. Good flying!

that's a shame, Boomer.  I'm half expecting the same news for Old Crow.  If you are going to get Dallas Darling, get a hold of Sean (Stoopid Monkey) and get the retract reinforcements.  These things are worth their weight in gold.  They're a little tricky to put in unless he's changed them.  By tricky I mean, you have to pound them with a hammer to get them absolutely flat and at 90 degrees.  Had a heck of a time the first time I tried to install them, but once I banged them out, they went in no trouble at all  I've had a couple of hard landings that would have broke the plastic base (I cracked a couple on Shangrila) but with these on, no damage at all.  Save yourself the price of new retracts and get a set.  Otherwise, unless your really experienced with tapered wing aircraft, you'll be replacing landing gear probably every three flights.

                    Hey Guys:
Talked to Martin Bedding today and he's going to see what he can do for me.  That's good news.  I told him that I'm not so concerned with the result as the fact that I get an answer.
So we'll see what they come up with.  In the meantime, I'm satisfied that at least I'm being heard.
On to other things.  Ordered an A3L Gyro for the Pitts.  Figured it'll give me a little more insurance, beside, I love the way the planes handle with the gyro on.  Very crisp control response and I really noticed the difference with the Mustangs.  Whether it helps in the winds (which it does) is secondary to the response I get with them on.
A great investment at any rate.  I noticed where someone was asking how to adjust your gains.  He probably is referring to the amount of throw that the controls exhibit when the gyro is on.  Believe it or not, its no big deal, ignore it.    There is a sensitivity adjustment on the top of the gyro, which I set to about 1/3 of the total throw and it works great for me.

Now if the weather would just cooperate!

Dang, does anyone remember the thread where we were talking about the zip tie mod for increasing the pitch of the prop?  One of the guys posted a break down of thicknesses of th zip ties in relation to pitch angle, now, of course, I can't find it and I really should have printed it out.  Anyone remember where this was, or if you're the fellow who posted this info, would you mind posting it again?

                    Thanks

                          Hi Dan,

I read your email above. You got hit with the "FMS changed servos but did not change part numbers" problem. We will send you a completely new set of flap servos so you have a matching set. I'm really sorry for the issues you've had both with planes and customer service. We will get to the bottom of it. I'm assigning your ticket to Alpha, our customer service manager. He will make sure you are credited for the retract(s) you purchased on your own when they should have been under warranty and he will make sure you are set with a working sound board. I've asked him to look through prior tickets and send you a list of everything we are going to send you/credit you for confirmation so we make sure we are doing the 100% correct thing.

                          Best regards,

I don't know of a better hobby company! Other companies should be really taking note of what Motion is doing in this Hobby. Motion takes customer service and the value of its customer family base to a level of honor and respect. I have no problem at all giving them 100% of my business.

The only times I'm forced to go outside of them is if there is something they just simply don't have. Thank goodness that hasn't been often.

I'm with you guys.  When we got into this hobby, we all hoped that we'd be lucky to find a company that we can rely on.  Just the day to day things that we've dealt with to learn to fly and learn the ins and outs of the hobby are stressful enough, we certainly don't want to deal with a company that isn't going to be there for us when we're ordering replacement parts and new this and that as we progress.
When I first did some research into this hobby, I did some comparison shopping to see who I wanted to deal with.  MotionR/C stood out beyond all others for customer service in a business that I've heard a lot of horror stories  from people dealing with other outfits.  So I got my feet wet, hoping the heck I made the right choice!  I was beginning to wonder and you know, it was starting to hurt.  So, instead of sitting back and letting it fester, I took it a step further and am really glad I did.  These guys, once made aware of a problem, are on it immediately and I couldn't be happier with the results!!
I think the lesson here is that we need to be aware of anyone on the blog that is having troubles and give them any assistance and above all, recommend that they contact Motion and if they have to no avail, then get in touch via e mail to Tom or Alpha, they will get it straightened out.  Hey things sometimes go by the wayside, it happens.  Lets try and see that its minimized in our company.  Motion's reputation is unsurpassed, we can help keep it that way!

You're 100% correct! That is exactly what I do when I see someone having a problem. Encourage them first, then let them know that it's not Motion's character to int nationally mishandle something, and that  some things in any organization fall through cracks. Then help to sound the horn to Motion to let them know to look "up" at this particular case...but only if it's gotten out of hand. We all have to be patient when something is truly being worked on.

I was having an issue with my T45, emailed Alpha, he called back on my cellr and we went through the issue step by step. In 10 minutes, we found the problem with the non-MRC ESC, used a Gecko I had in stock and works perfectly. On to flying again!
Maidened Old Crow today!  Had a fair first flight, then had an 'incident' on the second flight, chalk it up to missing something on preflight that I'm too embarrassed to admit to.  All is well with the plane though.  Just need some gear doors and she's back to new.

Diane got about a half hour in on her Apprentice and did extremely well!  We went out yesterday to the school parking lot and just taxied the plane around, it really seemed to help her get the feel of the plane when its coming at you.  As a result, her flying was great, she's on primary level with high rates.  I told her to stay there until she feels ready to advance, in the meantime, she's starting to relax and enjoy it!!

So, to redeem myself, I took the Pitts over for taxi trials, give her a good shake down on the ground before taking to the air.  she sure looked pretty out in the sun.

I  received the gyro today, so she's all set to go, yes, I made sure it was going in the right direction!  Guess what happened to Old Crow, based on that!

Also, went back to the field this evening as it was perfect flying weather, 65 degrees and no wind!!  Took Old Faithful Pandora One and danced around for a while, had to prove I could still fly!!

BBD flies again tomorrow and as many planes as I can jam in the truck!
