Tried( Note the operative word) to fly the Pitts today.  Now, in all fairness, I'm not used to a motor of this size, but of course, she pulled left when I hit the throttle.  End result was a broken prop.  No big deal but a little frustrating.  Anyway, had the Waco with me and so took it out on her.  I must say that I've found my groove with her, finally.  More times than not, she likes to drop a wing on final, which is strange because when I've tried to stall her, she just mushes like you'd expect.  Anyway, I keep a little throttle in (like two clicks) until the last second, if I have to add a touch more speed, its just a click away and she lands pretty well.  I ran her through all the aerobatics, loops, Immelmans, rolls tail slides, hammer heads all with no trouble.  Once when doing a vertical stall to tail slide her, she fell off and almost did an outside loop, which was fun.  One thing I've noticed is that the placement of the battery is critical.  I've tried jamming it all the way forward, so its pinching the cables on the battery, then she wants to drop on cruise settings, which is fine, trim it up and go.  I've found, however, that if I place the battery, forward, but not jammed tight, she flies perfectly.  Landings are fun with her, I mean that, I'm actually enjoying the landings!!

Diane had a successful day as well. Went through her three batteries and played around with the intermediate settings for a bit, just to ease into it.  I also moved the clevises in one hole on the control horns to give it a little more authority which really seemed to help.  Her take offs are a  thing of beauty and her landings are spot on!  I'm so impressed with her flying and I'm sure you would be too.  True to form, she has more trouble just flying than landing, but the improvement is great.  Admittedly, her problem flying was when we had it on intermediate, but she's willing to try the next setting, so that's something too.  I'm telling you, I'm struggling to shoot the landings that she's shooting with my planes.  Now when I try landing the Apprentice, I can land as well, but definitely not better.  I think I'll have to video one of her landings just so you can see.
How many people out there got into this hobby and have flown 20+ times and haven't even broke a prop??
She hasn't put a scratch on this plane.

Grossman, glad it was just a prop break. I'll be maidening mine tomorrow morning. I installed the Eagle A3 on it for fun practice later. Will fly her without the gyro for a while, until I get use to her. Then will turn it on to see how it works. That will be my first time using one. 

Will try to video the maiden with the Mobius hatcam.

Gman Dude when I ordered my Pandora in Jan. 2014 I ordered two extra props . Both are still in the plastic . Can't say that for much else but that is still the original. 

I'm so jealous, and very happy, of you having Diane flying and having a big time with you!!! :cool:

Hey guys, I committed the cardinal sin of forgetting about the tail dragger tendency of pulling to the left.  Watch Matt Maryan's maiden on you tube

You'll see what I mean, be ready with right rudder.  Now usually I can boost the throttle to 3/4 and the Mustangs will be in the air.  With the Pitts, being so much heavier, she is going to suck up more runway, so get your elevator back about 3/4 and hold on.
Personally, when I attempt again, I'm going to be right behind the aircraft on take off, a better vantage point to catch the twerks (or twitches as Bryan would say) as she's taking off.

Good idea but, try not to get too used to standing right behind your plane on the runway......

If you ever fly at an AMA sanctioned event you usually HAVE to fly from behind the designated pilot stations.

Just a thought.....I have found, the farther away I get from the plane, to the side.  The better. My reason for this working better compared to getting behind it, or very close to the side. Is like driving a car and looking directly in front of your vehicle, you will find yourself over correcting to keep going straight, compared to looking further out, down the road. I've found this true for me also, with my landings. Behind, looking for twerks=twerking to correct, which = lots of twerking!

As a general rule, I don't stand behind them after I know what to expect  on a take off run.  Generally, we stand at the side of the runway.
Good thought Lon, I'll have to try that, but I see what your getting at and it makes sense to me.

Well, I'd like to thank all the people at Motion R/C for a great year.  And I'd also like to thank all the wonderful people on this blog that have helped me through the whole process to get where I am today.  This thread was started with the idea of getting some help to learn how to fly and share with others in the same position.  Its become a great place to visit with friends and share what I've learned with others as well.  I'd also like to thank these guys as they've taught me so much and continue to: and last but not least the little plane that got me started, leading the way as always, Ol' Weedwacker

Hey guys and gals thanks a lot!
Got the new  aluminum retract retrofits today and they're on the planes 

They are really well done, the only issue I had was the first set I tried to install, the hole for the 'claw' was a little small so I filed it out and applied some bearing grease to the sides of the claw and it fit perfectly.  It's a little tricky at first, but I did it one side at a time, keeping the brass spacers tight to the opposite side while attaching the new piece.  Took me about an hour and a half for the first set, the second went much quicker as I had the method down.  These things are amazing!!  I remember when we were first talking about reinforcements and Sean, bless his heart, tried his best to help out, but really, this is what we all were hoping for!!

Here's the first one with one side done and the other ready to be removed, the biggest challenge is the little c clips, they give you a spare set , but I struggled to get them off, you can do it, but the right tool would be a great help.
On another note, here's Mrs. Grossman getting ready for flight.  Gotta love it!!!!

Wings and Wheels tomorrow, BBD will be there! I went to work on the cockpit last weekend, in preparation for the new pilot. She now has a canopy crank, a throttle quadrant, a wooden floor and a gun sight, did some detailing on the radio as well and it sure makes a big difference!!

Hey guys and gals, got a little reminder today of the title of this thread, not in a mean way at all, but I'm thinking of getting back to basics and maybe answering some questions that, even after a year and a half in the hobby, I don't know the answers to.
First of all, can someone explain to us all the difference in servos?
I understand a metal servo and a reverse servo, but are there separate servos insofar as flap servos versus aileron servos?
And what does 7 gm servo mean exactly.  Just a different weight or more than that.  I was thinking of changing to Spektrum servos for instance and they wanted to know the dimensions of the ones I have now, so they didn't seem to know what a 7 gm servo meant or maybe it was that they can be 7 gm and still come in different dimensions.

Lets get some feedback on this for the greater good.
