  • 64mm Freewing performance upgrades

Ok guys just getting back into the Hobby so please don’t beat up on me to badly. First EDF Habu 50mm ss second the Freewing 64mm F16 love the jet but have a few questions for you guys. Of course who doesn’t want more performance so I min wax clear coated the airframe does help actually but I’ve heard about replacing the EDF and adding a thrust tube to increase speed performance. Any insite would be greatly appreciated I did order a custom thrust tube made for this plane I’ve also read here about replacing the EDF with the FMS 3150. Anyone who’s done similar or has suggestions please I have no issues crafting upgrading myself
    Thanks all Bill

You want speed? Go 6S with the new 2500kV FW fan. You'll have to put a 6S capable ESC in it too. The HRB 1800mAh 6S battery is a good match.

What kind of flight times could I expect going to 6s? Do you have any suggestions on which ESC to go with that will still have thrust reverse? Very helpful where I fly

My timer is set to 4'10". No idea on a reversing ESC that would fit... The FreeWing ones are made by Hobby Wing, look at their site.

I’ve seen other posts about bad experiences going up in EDF size wondering on the F16 going from 64 to 70 could be another possibility. Only talking about 6mm size difference lots of 70’s out now running on 4-6s, working on another airframe right now just want to do it right the first time.

Try it and let us know.

            I tried a 80 in the 70mm F-16 and it was a big fail.

Paint job almost finished min wax clear coated now to decide what color on the mid section of the tail. I just finished up doing a Jolly Roger 🏴‍☠️ scheme on a 1.1 Trojan have gotten endless compliments on it

                Well!

I've seen a few reports of people claiming success in upsizing their EDF unit in a model, and many reports where it was a flop.

Remember that if the model was properly designed in the first place** the ducting will have been designed to manage the flow into and out of the stock size fan. Unless you are willing to put a lot of effort into redesigning the inlets, ducts and nozzles just sticking a bigger fan in there will probably disappoint.

** Of course, there are examples of stock models with poorly designed ducting and/or nozzles. This doesn't mean that they can be cured by sticking in a bigger fan, sometimes just a resized nozzle works wonders.

Definitely makes sense the F16 seems to have a very straight intake unlike some others only reason I’m considering trying this. I’ve also seen others just say to install the FMS 3150 EDF and makes a noticeable difference in performance my other thought was doing the FMS and a slightly larger ESC maybe a 60-70amp. I know when I installed a 70amp on my Habu 50mm seemed a little faster but more responsive to me. Only complaint I have on the Habu is the nose landing gear doesn’t take much to knock it out of place where the F16 has been the easiest EDF plane to take of and land

The new FW 6S 64 is the hottest 64 I know of. Be careful as some fans will require removing foam for the fan to fit. The new FW fan is larger than older ones, if you have a V1 F-16 for example the fan for the V2 requires removing foam to fit.

The F-16 doesn't have very efficient ducting. You changed ESCs but did the timing change between them? It is true some ESCs are more efficient than others.

What ever you decide keep us informed on how it works for you.

Most definitely I will I’m a tinkerer always have been when I got this F16 I was shocked by its size compared to the Habu or even my Tojans 1.1’s. On the Habu I installed a Spektrum 70amp BL ESC 3-4’s it’s the large one with with cooling fins and I threw in the X-Fly 50mm 2627-KV4600 EDF. Since I’m new to EDF honestly never even thought about timing changes from the ESC but allowed me to fly 3-4’s in the Habu with 8-10 min flight times from a 4s 2200 100c Spektrum battery. Nice you guys are helping school me on these things so I can make smarter decisions on what to do or not do. Thanks again for the wisdom

So you are putting a 4S 70mm EDF in it?

This is what I ordered to test in the F16 what do you all think. FMS had been out of stock on there 64mm EDF they just came back in stock so I figured I’d buy one if this 70mm upgrade doesn’t work out to my liking

I thought you were going 70mm? I saw you say you bought a 4S 59A ESC for it too?

First and foremost I think that you should stay with a FreeWing V2 64mm EDF unit. You have the V2 F-16, correct? The V2 fans are a different size than older FreeWing fans and most other brands so there may be fitment issues.

If you do hog out your plane to fit a 70mm fan its not so easy to go back. Yes you can but doing it well isn't that easy. That was why I suggested from the start to go 6S with the 2500kV FreeWing 64mm fan. It would have been drop in easy and give you about a pound more thrust than you currently have.

I did order a Freewing 70mm EDF and a 60amp ESC both from Motion. Figured I’d do this in my second F16 airframe just to see it’s been crashed repaired perfect test mule per se.

On your suggestion going 6’s any battery suggestions there? I’ve only been using Spekrum so far mainly because I like there telemetry feature but not opposed to trying batteries from another manufacturer
