  • Question. For the Sundowners tail. Was the paint white insignia or a whiter white? Landing gear struts also?

    Thanks, Rex

Rex, Firstly, your fill, sand, prime is paying dividends.

The vertical does not look 'foamy' at all, well done.

The VF-111 Phantom vertical is Insignia White, but I used the Behr exterior latex "Pure White" base for all the Insignia White on my Phantom.

I painted the entire vertical white and cut out the red Sundown stripes from Callie's sheet.

I also cut the stripe from the sun portion making certain I had marked where the marking on each side should go beforehand.

The tricky part is making sure the stripes line up with each other at the top of the vertical.

I good color match for the Insignia Red will allow some fudge factor filling in at and around the top edges and where the stripes meet the sun.

I also painted red, yellow, orange blue green black around the trailing edge of the rudder.

Those colors were mixed quickly using Vallejo acrylics.

You're going to top coat the model, I presume, so 99% of all this will not be seen.

Take your time and use water on the surfaces and graphics in order to slide 'em where you want 'em.

I squeegeed using Q-tips and soft paper towels and let everything dry over night before gently squeegeed everything down again.

      Hope this helps.

      Best, LB

      • Elbee,
Your Phantom tail came out great. I have Insignia white, grey and red matched at HD from my M&M FS color chips, so I'm good there. I didn't know but HD has the FS standard paint #s in their paint computer at our store. All you need is your FS#. Plan to order graphics from Callie first of the year. Going to ask if I can get paint masks for the sunburst because I'd like to paint these on. Might change me mind?
Yeah, 4 coats of poly-acrylic and lite sanding between builds a good flat surface that with filler primer sanded eliminates the foam showing thru. Did this on the Corsair and P-47.
I will continue to pick your mind as I go along on this journey.

        Best Regards, Rex

        • Looking on the web, I found information on the inboard pylons. Lots of diagrams both for the Navy and Air Force pylons and missiles. I enlarged the pylon to match the FW phantom and will add the panel lines, ect. before painting. The FW pylons are kinda semi-scale but I think using the TAR method they will look ok.
I sprayed a thin 2nd primer coat and now back to fixing bobbles and sanding, again. Ugh
Also foud a picture of the F4B&C turkey feathers

PS Please dismiss my cluttered bench, started out clean 5x10' table and now working in a 1' square area. Anyone else have this problem?
          Best Regards, Rex

            • Cleaned bench but after 2 days it's messy again.

Moving on with the Phantom I sanded the second coat of primer, one side looks great, the other side will take some filling to feather in around the protruding servo, checking my 3-view found that some manuf. lines on the left side needed to be filled. Pylons getting filler on manfu. seams also. Slow but moving along.
              Best Regards, Rex
