  • Dynam ME-109 review

I finished up the Dynam ME-109 and maidened it today. What a treat! The larger planes really do fly easier than the little ones! Up until now, almost all of my planes were 1100mm or smaller, and while they fly well, they just can't be compared to these larger planes with 50"+ wingspans, especially if there is any wind at all! The only thing I still need to work on with the 109 is to increase the rake of the gear. It has a tendency to want to tip on the grass, but once in the air...WOW! Very stable and surprising easy to fly. I did intentionally take up high and stall it, and it will slow down to just a creep, but will drop a wing tip if provoked. I am flying it with the Orange HK 6 channel rx that has a 3 axis gyro built in, so that no doubt helps the stability. The gains are turned down pretty low, but I am happy with the performance, so I doubt I will mess with them.

The ME-109 simply looks awesome in the air, and on those fast, low fly-bys. Plenty of power, very responsive, loops, rolls, inverted, any of your favorite warbird moves are a piece of cake for this Messerschmitt. Landings are not bad at all, come in with a bit of power, maybe 1/4 throttle, kind of feather it and she settles in, and it will sit right down on the mains and roll out.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with the quality of the kit, the ease of assembly, and certainly its flight characteristics. I think it is a very well engineered kit, especially for the price. I held off building this one for about a year while I practiced and got more experience and confidence in flying. Certainly not a beginner plane, but an easy intermediate plane, and if you have any low wing warbird experience, this one won't be a problem to fly. I would highly recommend it if you are on the fence about it!

    Greetings Loneflier,

    Happy New Year!!

Thanks for the 109 review..... I too have had this great plane still sitting around in the box for at least a year and for no better reason than I haven't gotten around to building it (and others).

Your review may be what I needed to get busy and slap that bad boy together.

    Thanks,

      RE: Dynam ME-109 review

      Hello Rich,
Am interested in what the ground handling characteristics are like, especially takeoff/landing without the gyro. So many reports about the narrow stance gear, indicating a lot of increased difficulty especially with the long nose P factor. I don't use the gyro's(many reasons for this) and was wondering if perchance you tried without one.

      Hello Bill,
You are so lucky that ya live so far away from me because I would be at your place a lot, pestering you for a donation on those unbuilt airframes. How do you keep from putting one together for so long?? For me, the mail lady has barely dropped the package in my grubby hands and the box cutter is shredding the packaging tape and any other plans get waylaid.

        RE: Dynam ME-109 review

        Hey Rocketeer and OV10,

I actually never turned off the gyro on my 109 during either of the flights. I double and triple checked that all the throws were correct, and decided to leave it on for the maiden flight. Like I said, I had the gains set as they came from the factory, which is supposed to be a fairly minimal setting. In fact, to check that the throws were correct, I had to dial the gains up a good bit, then move the aircraft to verify all was working correctly. Then I dialed them back down. If you move the plane around, you will hear the servos move some, but it is pretty slight.

That said, ground handling really was not bad at all. I have had other planes, such as a J3 Cub, or the Durafly Monocoupe that wanted to turn left worse than the 109 on take off. I did just ease into the throttle, and got it moving pretty good before it lifted the tail. I would guess I was around half throttle when it lifted off the ground. Once in the air, there was no noticeable torque roll. Keep in mind that I was pretty gentle on the controls until I was able to determine if the trim was adjusted properly, so no sudden firewalling of the throttle was applied.

I do fly off grass, and the model does have a tendency to want to nose over if the grass isn't very short. I have since added some spacers under the retracts to help with the rake, but have not been able to fly due to weather here. Cold, wet, and windy all this weekend. On landing, again with gyros on, it really floated in nicely with just about 1/4 throttle, and I was kind of feathering it to make a gentle landing, and it did land nicely and roll out with no tip over.  I would have to say that based only my initial two flights that ground handling is really not bad at all, especially for a war bird.

I know I didn't really answer your question OV10, regarding ground handling and flight without the gyro, but since I had them turned down pretty far, I really don't think they made a lot of difference. If it ever quits raining here, I plan to go back out and try it again.

I also have the FMS 1450mm P-40 that is ready to go now, and I did not put a gyro in this one, so we'll see how that goes!
        Good luck to you!

          Hello Charlie,

Hey Buddy, you're welcome to come by and hang out any time your near my hood!!!!

          Let's see..... We could pick from the;

          Carbon Z Cub
          Dynam Me 109
          Dynam Grande Cruiser (duplicate)
          Apprentice e
          Predator Drone ARF
          90mm EDF Jet ARF
or The SK Ideas Starship Enterprise 1702-A (Kit)
          Dynam Waco (duplicate)

All still in the boxes...........    What can I say, my wife says I'm patient to a fault.
          Comes from teaching I suppose.

I've just been building other stuff lately, mostly EDF's. Except for the HK C-47 1600mm (see that post for latest, although not so great, photos).
I'm sure I'll get around to others eventually.

Loneflier's got me pumped on the 109 though.

            Hey Rocketeer,

You sound a lot like me in terms of kits sitting around not built yet! I am afraid if we lived nearby, it might only get worse, though it would be nice to have a flying buddy nearby! Like you, I have the Grand Cruiser still in the box, along with one of the Horizon Hawker Hurricane 25e, and a Dynam Hawker Hurricane, the Dynam Spitfire, Tempest, Corsair, and Waco. All unbuilt. Then there are the FMS 1450 kits too. I am a lucky guy since my wife just shakes her head and takes it all stride. I would be in trouble if my daughter ever moves back home though, since her room is filled with airplanes!! :D

One of my New Year resolutions is to finally build the workshop out back so that I can move my planes out of the house and have a place dedicated just to my hobby, or as my wife calls it, my obsession!! Ha!

I would encourage you to check out that Me-109 though. Sweet kit, and even better flying plane. It flies a lot like a sport plane, but still has the look and presence of a war bird.

              Greetings Loneflier,

Man, just think of all the fun we could have if all of us that interacted the most here on the forum live even relatively close to each other!!!

OK, you've convinced me to make the 109 my next project!! (Right after the new Flyzone Select Scale Zero that I got for Christmas).

Cool! You did get the Zero then? Looks like a sweet plane, and it appears from the few views I have seen of it that it does have the servoless retracts. Is that the case? I will be looking forward to your reviews on that one as well as the C-47!

BTW-My wife did give me the Top RC FW-190 that you recommended as one of my Christmas presents, and I have to tell you that you were right on with your description. Very nice looking kit. I was impressed that it even has sequenced doors on the retracts. She also got me the LX PT-17 Stearman which looks awesome too. Like I said, I am a lucky guy to have a wife so supportive and understanding of my hobby.

I'll have to look up the E version of the 109 to see what the differences are between them. BTW-anyone know why the Me-109 is also known as the Bf-109? Guess I need to go back and read some of my history books on these planes!

E series was obviously an early variant, among other things the F and onward series had an improved engine, large differences visually anyways on the E series are the support struts on the horizontal stabilizers as well as a more stubby nose and squared off wing tips, air intake etc.

And here is a better answer to the ME/BF then I could type to try and explain it!

Willi Messerschmitt was the designer of several great aircraft.  He worked for an aircraft manufacturer called Bayerische Flugzeugwerke so it was know as the BF 109 for the company who manufactured it and and ME 109 for the man who designed it.  Originally it was a single seat design based on his ME(BF)108 Taifun, a four seat trainer-civilain-transport plane (as all designs in Germany could not be military aircraft. Anyway, the ME109 utilized several of the design features of the ME108.  The 108 is seen in several movies depicting the ME109. Check out Indian Jones The last Crusade or 633 Squadron.  Even Patton, I believe.

Thanks Martin Caidin, I still have several of his books

                            Thanks Guys,

I learned something today! I've always wondered why the Bf designation, and to quote Paul Harvey, "Now I know the rest of the story"! Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks!

Was hoping to get a maiden flight in today on my FMS 1450mm P-40, but ended up spending the day with my daughter at the doctor's office. She fell off a curb and we thought maybe her ankle was broken,  but was mainly a bad sprain. Glad she is OK, but it would have been a perfect day here for flying. Sunny, highs near 50, little to no wind. Tomorrow comes the deep freeze again, along with 20mph winds, so the maiden will have to wait.

Hang in there Lone, glad to hear your daughter didn't break something, but a sprain can be just as bad!
I hear you on the weather, we're going into deep freeze mode again as well, was up in the 40s this morning, but plunging now!
I booked Thursday and Friday off as I had PTO carried over from 2014 that I have to use, so thought I'd take a chance that one out of four days might be decent, even if I have to break out the long johns!!  Just drove by the field and its clear of snow, but the wind is up.  Usually when its clear of snow, that means we will get more tonight!!!

                                  Thanks G56,

Yes, my daughter was back off to teaching this morning on crutches and a special boot. I think she might have trouble keeping up with the kids in her class for a while!

The weather here today is extremely windy, and very cold. They are saying windchills into the single digits tonight and tomorrow, and gusts are coming by at over 30mph. Definitely a no fly day here for sure. The cold wave is supposed to last up to this weekend, but then back to a bit more seasonal temps around here. Maybe it will calm enough I can get some flying in then. I tell you, this hobby is like an addiction! If I don't get to fly at least once a week, I start having withdrawals!!

It will be back to work tomorrow for me. The time off was great, but guess I am ready to head back. Hoping to retire in another 6 years or so, and judging by the way time is going by lately, that probably won't take too long to get here!
