StoopidMonkey, picked up the P40 last Tuesday and maiden was Sunday also. I pretty much had same issue. Started to take off and it pulled to the left, on attempt to correct it hit the ground. After replacing the prop I had a friend with a LOT more XP than me take it up. Initially he got it up and down but felt it was squirrley. He took it up again and on another flight it just took a total nose dive into the ground. Busted spinner, prop and cowl. A little compression on the body (not bad), a little damage to the wing (may replace) and what may have been the nose dive issue was the motor mount was loose on the right side. Motor was at an angle when we picked it up.

Well to start the motor has to have left thrust in the motor this is normal. You need to hold right rudder for a few seconds on take off to stop the prop torque to the left. You also want to use your expo on your radio,you can set that up to 50% on all throws. Use dual rate low 50% and high 80-100% your choice. This should make the plane fly allot better. More in likely the crash broke the motor mount free. If you do not have a computer radio then you will want to change the throws on the servo arms bring the push rods in towards the servo. On the control horns bring them up towards the flight surfaces.

Correct me if I am wrong but; rc planes should have right and down thrust (motor should be cocked a bit right and down), also moving the clevis toward the flight surface on the control horn will give you more throw, you want to move the clevis away from the flight surface to the furthest hole away from Aileron, rudder, and elevator for less throw.
Setting up your control rod the way that is pictured here will give you the least amount of throw.

What you stated about the control horns is correct, but the note from MRC stated to move the rods to the inner holes on the SERVO ARM. That would have the same type of dampening effect as moving a clevis to the outer holes on the control horn. But wait, I see they also mention moving the clevis closer to the control surface! They ARE wrong, and you are right! Also, I don't think they worded their response very well about the engine thrust, but I believe they were just referring to the tendency of the plane's torque to pull it to the left and why the pilot needs to be giving right rudder. Warbirds are notorious for a hard left turn on take off, but the slower and easier you go, the less the impact of that torque pull. I'm always ready with plenty of right rudder right as the wheels leave the ground.

I should have the parts for my P-40 tomorrow! I will be putting this one and my mustang back together, and try to re-maiden them both ASAP. According to some of the things I have been reading; these 800mm warbirds are super touchy about their control surfaces, I was going over mine and noticed that the right aileron was not perfectly lined up (maybe my CG was correct). I took a full turn and a half out of the clevis to bring it in line. I thought I had them lined up but I must have pulled on the servo arm setting it up, and like a dumb arse I did not re check my flight surfaces before the maiden (gave myself 20 lashings for knowing better), got in too big a hurry to fly. I have also reset my control rods so that I am getting the least amount of throw, combined with 60% low rates this thing should barely roll, we will see...
Just got 2 flights in with my P-40! I really like this little plane, however the 1000mah 2s battery that is recommended leaves the plane tail heavy. She flies awesome with the 1300mah 3s battery a little nose heavy but at least you don't have to fight the plane to keep it in the air. I used the 2s battery on the second flight and suffered another crash, the 2s battery will never be flown again, not in this plane. With the 3s battery she is a pure joy, fast as all get out, and predictable doing what you want it to do. She responds well to inputs, and is well behaved. I have dialed down my throws to 60% and have my clevices on the farthest out board holes on the control surfaces and in board holes on the servo arms. If you are buying this plane I do not recommend getting the 2s battery, save the heart and headache get the 3s 1300mah battery, in fact get a few as you will not want to stop flying!
Makes me glad I bought the 1300s and not the 1000s LOL. Parts are ordered for my P-40 and I have dropped the DR for this plane on the Taranis. Sean did you drop your expo also? I have it set to 30 for the low but if it is flying well for you at lower let me know. Glued my motor mount and re mounted the motor. Its got a minute down angle to it, not enough to prevent flying but its there *LOL*.

Are you still using the stock ESC with the 3 cell battery? Any issues with heating? I've been flying mine with a 2S 1300 and it is a bit underpowered, but flyable. Might have to step up to the 3S if it is working well for you.
I only flew it the one time with the 3s, and the ESC was not all that hot. I kept the throttle at 50% for most of the flight with a couple bursts to WOT, for a couple fast low level flybys. She is smoking fast fire walled on 3s! You will not be disappointed! I will be ordering more of these 3s 1300mah batteries this week, and maybe a new wing.

I didn't buy the 1300 2s because I was not sure of the weight but seems like many are flying with the 1300 2s with no problems. I still fly with a 1300 2s but its 3/4 to WOT all the time as mentioned. I also have a A3 gyro in my 800mm P-40 and it make a nice improvement especially flying in the wind.

I've got the 980mm high speed version, but I don't fly it with the 4S 2500's, which make it a rocket. I fly it with a 3S 2200 and it flies great and more scale like. It's a well made plane. I think the 980mm suits me better than an 800mm size. Just big enough. Good luck!

Thanks I like the mid sized planes better also. I can put 4 or so in the back of my suburban. Any thing bigger than 50" is nearly to big and the 800's are a little small for our winds.
I have not timed it yet on 3s 1300, so much fun that I hit LVC like the guy in the video did. I would say about 6 minutes of hard flying. I do not know if 2200s will fit. If it does let us know how it flies.
