Very nice bird...needs more work than the HK, but is obvious due to the details on it.

One of these days, I’d like to get my hands on a Byron Kit. Went to the factory in 1990, as grandparents lived about 30 minutes away...incredible facility. They then had the WWII reenactment with the Iwo Jima flag raising. One very expensive, patriotic display on his private lake.

might be too low a KV would need to big a prop , max size prop that would fit the plane is around the 13 inch mark any bigger and u will be scraping the ground :)

Ok, good advice. Those motor are worki g with 15 inch tigercat prop.

What do you guys think about this engine for the Baron? , that is the FMS TIGERCAT 1700 engine. I have 2 of those that i bought for spare for my tigercat.

Looking at the specs of the two planes, I would say that motor with the same size of ESCs and props as the F7F, this probably will work for the VQ Baron. The Cat weighs in at 5200g, while the Baron is 4300g. I have the FMS TiCat and on 6s, it's very powerful and fast. The TiCat prop is 14X8X3. The Baron suggests a 12X7X2. Now, the biggest consideration is that the TiCat is a "highwing" plane while the Baron is a low wing plane, making the motor shafts seemingly closer to the ground. However, take a look at the two planes ............................ The engine nacelles on the TiCat is slung from below the wing. The Baron nacelles are "above" the wing. It might just work. You would have to measure the distance from the motor shaft of both planes and see just how close to the ground the prop blade tips will come. Diameter-wise, we're talking only a 1/2" closer to the ground from one prop to the other but the nacelle mounting style may more than accommodate the TiCat props. Knowing how vibrant the performance is on the TiCat, I can easily imagine how much of a rocket ship the Baron could be with the same drivetrain. The other consideration would be balance using the TiCat's battery. How is a 5000mah, 6s battery going to affect the ability to achieve the proper CG on the Baron? Will the battery compartment have enough wiggle room to move that big battery around to make it balance? We're talking 5000mah 6s vs 4s - a difference of over 1/2 a lb. May not be critical but something to look at nevertheless. If I were to do this plane, I would definitely have a close look at the FMS TiCat drivetrain.

The Baron would weight at 4300g empty :) no electrics motors etc , RTF it would weight over 5kgs.i used 13x8x3 blade props and that would mow the grass as it took off, then changed down to the 12x8x3 which was better this was using the dualsky motors and 4s4000 battery.

The HobbyKing site says RTF weight of 4300g. I take it you've weighed yours? If it's over 5kg, that would put it in the same range as the FMS F7F. If the blades are that close to the ground, a 12X10X3 or 11X11X3 would give the same bite, that is if such a prop exists.

mine was 5.4 kg RTF that's with 2x 4000 mah batteries , eflite 60-120 mains and 105 degree nose...helps to use half flap on takeoff as well...

Question to all - what diameter spinner(s) did you use? I want to use aluminium spinners and I will have counter-rotating 12x8x3 propellers. I am not sure what diameter matches well with the engine cowling (don't have the plane yet).

I think they where 70mm or 75mm hobbyking 3 blade spinners

I'm wondering if perhaps HobbyKing ran into copyright issues with VQ Models. They never gave any reference to "VQ" on their webpage. The Twin Otter is now on BACK ORDER with no estimated availability. And yet, they are still available from the distributors of VQ Models. I'm glad I got my Twin Otter when I did.
