  • Chris Craft 19' Racing Runabout

    Hi

I have started to build my Chris Craft today.
    Begiining with the frames......
but honestly: for this price. i have never seen such a bad "laser cut" wooden parts as this here. Nothing is complete, you always have to cut on the backsinde with a knife and lots of sandpaper work to get them smooth.
And the quality of the wood for the frames is very low
I hope it will get better later with the mahagoni......

Anyone interested in a build log? Then I will post my steps.......

Tyrell63 I am always interesting in seeing other modelers' build logs. Especially for as intensive a build as yours sounds like it will be!

T6, Please post your build. Could you also post a picture of which Chris Craft you are building? Is it Dumas Kit #1249? Best, LB

        Building Log

        Chris Craft
        Dumas Kit No 1249

Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_1606.jpg Views:	0 Size:	117.2 KB ID:	320869Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_1626.jpg Views:	0 Size:	115.1 KB ID:	320868Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_1627.jpg Views:	0 Size:	132.9 KB ID:	320863Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_1628.jpg Views:	0 Size:	101.0 KB ID:	320862

The manual comes in 2 "books"
Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_1629.jpg Views:	0 Size:	83.9 KB ID:	320861Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_1630.jpg Views:	0 Size:	138.3 KB ID:	320864
        and a full size plan
Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_1631.jpg Views:	0 Size:	126.4 KB ID:	320872

1st Problem ....it is all in inch, not in cm
So you have to drill a hole in 1/4" (I will drill in 6mm instead)

all the frames and the keel (2 parts)
Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_1608.jpg Views:	0 Size:	133.2 KB ID:	320866Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_1625.jpg Views:	0 Size:	140.6 KB ID:	320865Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_1612.jpg Views:	0 Size:	163.6 KB ID:	320867

        and the deck frame
Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_1613.jpg Views:	0 Size:	34.5 KB ID:	320870

All these parts need a lot of sanding. The quality of these cuts are very low.

(Will be continued soon.....after my S.E.5a is covered)

[QUOTE=Tyrell63;n320860]Building Log: Chris Craft Dumas Kit No 1249 /QUOTE]

T6, Thank you. I have begun the same kit, though some 15+ years ago. I am at the stage of applying the mahogany strips and could not decide which gluing method to use. I did not give up on the project, just set it aside in my last relocation. Your build might inspire me to "begin again". It is a beautiful design and there are a few minor challenges so far. Looking forward to watching your progress. Best, LB

                Planking the Bottom

Question: Which glue I can use? In the manual they said:
                No expoxy....
Gap filling (medium) CA glue. The bottom plank are made of PVC
                Any suggestions?

T6, If you're using CA+ (gap filler), rough up the PVC planks a bit for better adhesion. I used CA+ and accelerator to plank mine, making certain I wiped away as much CA+ as I could before applying the accelerator. Note that my kit has plywood planks not PVC and I epoxy-coated the interior of the boat after this step. Best, LB

T6, My guess is you can find CA adhesives in Singapore at any hobby center or even a hardware store. Best, LB
