I have heard of using a cell phone camera to see this but had no luck. Maybe my iphone 7 is too old a model? Or maybe the room was too bright? I will have to try again in dimmer light.

Your IPhone might be too NEW. I use my old flip phone and works great.

By the way, it was mentioned that someone used one of these laser diodes and " In daylight, and at battle distances - - 30 feet or so - the dot becomes a dim, diffuse red glow hard to see. " . This is not entirely correct. Direct sunlight will wash them out, as it will most lights. They show up fine in shadow outside on a sunny day and work great indoors. The dot only becomes a dim, diffuse glow at 30 feet if the device is not focused. The front section has a lens and can be screwed in and out to adjust focus. Once focused, I am getting a bright red dot about the diameter of a US penny, at 50 feet. Reading some of the comments and complaints from purchasers of these kinds of laser diodes, it seems some of them arrive "glued" so they cant be focused. I suspect that, the outer body being made of brass, some suppliers are spraying or dipping them in lacquer so they don't tarnish and it is locking the threads. Probably the person who tried one had the bad luck to get some that couldn't be focused.
