  • M2 Bradley by Tongde

Came today. A lot of interesting things even just 20 minutes after unboxing. Essentially I powered it up, tested traverse, elevation, travel and the TOW.

Before I get started, I'd like to say that this is a real departure from other tanks on the market. It's the first I know of that is designed without Airsoft. it's a recognition of our hobby as opposed to the toy demographic I hope this concept is successful, because it majorly expands the possibilities for modelling armored fighting vehicles.

Ok, first observations. It's large. I posed it next to my M60 for length comparison:

The rear deck hatch holds the battery. Mine came with one installed and the wires disappearing into the interior. Charging is still supposed to be through a balance tap plug under the front hatch. That's where the on/off switch is also. I have Admiral brand 3500 mah packs that will sit there, and I can solder connectors to eliminate the in-tank charging.

As we'd surmised, the main auto cannon is activated by the machine gun switch. The IR emitter is in the TOW launcher. I'll be replacing their emitter with a stronger one in the future. The launcher can be raised and lowered, but it doesn't have an effect to firing, it's just cosmetic. Cool, though! Maybe I can hide behind a berm with just it exposed. There is no elevation capability for the launcher. Since we get up to a 10 degree horizontal spread with our recessed, high power IR LED's, I'm guessing we'll have the same spread in the vertical axis. Raising the TOW launcher up and down revealed another difference. To actuate it, one holds down the "V" button while moving the left stick up or down. The earlier transmitters don't have this capability! I bound the M2 to another Tx, and the launcher wouldn't move. What the heck? I looked at the back of the M2 Tx. Voila! Other than the TOW, the v.1 and now v.2 Tx's seem compatible.

Regarding the auto cannon, I believe it operates by a solenoid. It slams the gun back, hits a switch and rebounds forward. I have a Panzer II tank conversion from 35RCTANK that works like this. The means that slowing down the rate of fire may not easy or even possible. I'll leave that to the electronic wizards out there.

So there we are, vaporware no more. Let's talk!
The more screws it takes to reassemble a tank, the more likely it is you left something out!

I knew it was going to be big at 1/15 vs 1/16 scale but dang that is one large AFV as the M60 is not a small tank. I can't wait to hear how it drives.

A quick clip to show it runs. You can see a large gap in front between the upper and lower hull. There is a plate that I haven't fitted yet that covers it. I thought for a minute it was a major flaw, but all is good.

Suspension looks like it works well and seems to have some weight to it as it's not bouncing around.

Metal wheels, tracks and gearboxes lend it weight. Actually the tracks seem to slip a little bit. Runs well though.

I missed the whole 1/15 thing....why would they even do that? Just seems kinda weird. Glad you got yours finally. I'm waiting on a M60, finally ordered one. Really looking forward to their Stuart....Hopefully it's 1/16 though

I did some math in my previous thread and updated it now that I have the M2, taking real vehicle lengths and seeing what the actual scales are. To be completely honest, I took the real measurements from Wikipedia, and my tank measurements with a ruler:

The M2 Bradley’s length is 6.55m. (See disclaimer above.) 1/16 scale would make it 40.9cm, 43.6 cm if it’s 1/15 scale.
My TD M2 is 44cm long. This makes its scale1/14.8.

The M60 is 7m long (excl. barrel). 1/16 scale should make it 43.7cm long.
My M60 is 45cm long. Its scale is 1/15.5.

My point is just that r/c tanks are not fine scale, other considerations are present. Shipping size, motor/gearbox size, standardization of components, to name a few. To my mind 1/16 scale is more a class definition than a precise measurement. Some modelers have taken true scale kits, like those from Takom, Das Werk and Andy's Hobbies and motorized them, but those I've done are not as robust as purpose built r/c tanks.

For running around in the dirt, I apply the 6 foot rule. At 6 feet or more distance, 1/16, 1/15.5,1/15 & 1/14.8 variance is tolerable.

                She’s a biggun.
It just looks big by comparison..

And HDMM, TongDe is not making an M5 Stewart. Coolbank Wang is working in one but DKLM who is a TD rep says they are not parented on that project as other tanks are in the works.

FYI, Tongde just posted on FB that Nova Hobbies has become their NA dealer. Don't see the M2 there, but keep an eye on the website.

That was done to fit the gearboxes.

So far Nova hobbies only has the Leopard 2 they've been selling on Ebay. Will be interesting to see pricing, they are in Canada and are known for inflated pricing.

Gotcha....Coolbank and Tongde are in cahoots so the two get intertwined on things it seems.

Yeah, the post on FB was from Tongde, not Nova. I'm guessing whatever stock Nova may be getting from TD is on a container ship.

Not to rub salt in a wound, but I'm working on a TD Centurion. it's a very nice product.

You're a tease! What other tanks are in the works?

Working slowly on the M2. Being a complex model and with no text pics only instructions, it's prudent to do a lot of dry-fitting to reduce surprises, unpleasant and otherwise. A positive one is the smoke system (I know, everyone tears them out. I don't). There is an honest to god filler cap on the top deck right next to the exhaust vent. It's above and to the right. It does click into place, but I would inevitably lose the tan and brown cap somewhere in the great outdoors!

Does the engine hatch open?if so you could route the filler tube out that way like I did with the t34, just open the drivers hatch and fill from there

Sorry I wasn’t clear. That IS the to fill the smoke fluid. Right up top, right in front.

I understood that, I was meaning if you were worried about losing the cap you could move the fill point to under the front hatch if it opens
