You can get the Torro or the Hooben Super 8 RTR at less than half the price.

You can't get the HVSS with HL. There are a numbers of aftermarket 75mm and 76mm turret conversions available for the Tamiya Sherman that have been around for years along with endless other detailing parts.

The HVSS, tracks and the super smooth gearboxes IMO are the true value of the Tamiya Sherman, but absolutely nothing else. The kits originated back in the mid 1970 and in many ways is still stuck in the 70s.

It is though the best all be it expensive of all the base platforms for custom building a late war to early cold war Sherman off of. I plan on buying one for a "EZ8" 76mm T23 turret build once the price on EBay comes down a few months after they are available. I will be throwing away the outdated MFU/DMD and replacing it some more to my liking.

Tamiya does it the way they want to. Mechanically I think Tamiya is great in the drivetrain department, but their motor elevation systems are crap IMO. I've had nothing but issues with my KV-2 elevation. In fact I had to remove the spring on it to even get it to work right. Made me wonder if Tamiya even tested the KV-2 turret before releasing it. Now with the Centurion using servos, it only took them like 20 years to catch up. The sad part is they are going to release the kit again, but it will be the same as the last kit only more expensive - no servos and not an upgraded control package. Tamiya has no incentive to actually update the kit because people just keep buying it especially because the only commercial manufacturing of an HVSS competitor is Hooben. We all know that their version of the HVSS is junk. I will probably not buy another Tamiya, unless they release some over top, gotta have it tank. I won't hold my breath... It's really sad, because I would assume guys like me with some disposable income would be a perfect market for their product.

Overall, the Tamiya Sherman is a beautiful tank. But it’s boring. Especially since henglong makes a 105 howitzer Sherman.
I did all the work to convert the Tamiya Sherman into an EZ8 a long time ago. It was my first build but second completed. I used a Nick Aguilar urethane turret that was empty and required the builder to fit all the Tamiya guts into in their own as well as cut in a urethane cast a3 engine deck and lengthen the back of the hull properly.

At this time, none of that work is worth doing.
It’s value is in the chassis, and then install a taigen upper half on it and make fenders, as I did twice, or buy a hooben and put its top half onto the Tamiya chassis, which I have done once, or buy my turret and fenders, install them in a henglong Sherman hull and put them onto the Tamiya chassis.

But then you are still paying 900 bucks for the tsmiya.

if your on a budget, my Henglong Sherman ez8 conversion kits are a better choice. But every hrs a different Idea or way they want to do the project. I’ve done it just about all the ways it can be done to build an EZ8. Some I have cobbled together I have not even mentioned how it did it because they are just overly complicated.
