  • First post, with questions about HL Abrams

    Good morning all,
My fist post here, although I have been lurking for a while. I'm mostly an RC car guy, but those 1/16 tanks look like a lot of fun! I've been looking at the HL Abrams M1A2 on flea-bay, and I'm curious about a couple of things. Is it better to have all of the wheels/tracks in metal or will just the tracks, sprocket & idler wheels work? Should I go for the red motor upgrade right away?
    Thanks!
    John

The all plastic version works really well and you don’t need the upgraded motors. If you go metal do it all and also get the reds.

I think it depends on you more than the tank.
If you are keen to mod I think all metal, I do think the plastic lower hull version absolutely needs mods (mine sure as heck did) to run all metal running gear reliably. There is Better more realistic movement in these when they are heavy.
All Plastic would be a great way to jump in if you aren’t sure.

Go with the all metal upgraded version and add the red 390 motors. You will be thankful you did.

It all depends on how much you want to get into RC tank. If you have anything more than just a causal interest for just one tank, particularly you have a RC car background, a metal version with the red 390 motor is a must have. The heavier chassis looks and runs more realistically

On the other hand, the HL came a long way since the early days. It can run fine on manicured lawn and most dirt roads. I have very low opinion on Heng Long metal parts. I prefer to get the basic plastic version and do the metal upgrade myself using better quality aftermarket metal parts.

Originally, my 2005 HL Snow Leopard can run indoor on paved surfaces only. I had upgraded it several times to 2022 HL Pershing performance.
A few days ago, I posted on a Heng Long Metal Barrel Recoil BB shooting unit for 3838 Pershing upgrade kit that I purchased for my 2005 Snow Leopard. I said that over 18 years, HL changed the cannon mantle mounting plate enough that the kit does not fit my Pershing. I contact the Toucan seller (build-for-u) to request a return.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses! I'll probably start with the plastic version and do the upgrades down the road. That way I'm out less money if I don't end up keeping it.

If you decide you like them, worst case you have 2. You can battle then👍🏻
