Heng long tank but with my own radio?

Commanders, I’d like to use my own radio gear on my heng long tanks. Is there any way to do this while still keeping the features like bb’s, ir’s and sound? I saw a video on YouTube but it’s 11 years ago. He used some kind of “middle man” board to use his turnigy 9xr radio. I believe it’s called RC2HL. Apparently there’s a RC5HL as well but again this video is pushing 12 years. Is this still available today particularly in the states?

update: apparently 3 years ago I’ve already asked this question. I found the thread I created. I had completely forgotten I’ve asked this same question. Here’s the link to the thread if mods want to delete this thread. my apologies.

RC5HL which converts true professional RC radio signals to the Heng Long format used by the RX-18 controller (27mHz ONLY). The newer 6.x and 7.x systems use a 2.4Ghz signal so I doubt the RC5HL will work on the new motherboards.

RC Tanks Australia sold them or still does, but I haven't heard of anyone buying anything from them in a long time so maybe they aren't actually in business. You would have to contact them to find out if it works with the newer tanks, but I would guess it doesn't because the newer boards are all integrated. The older RX-18 had a daughter board that controlled the FM 27Mhz signals. There is no way to tap into the 2.4Ghz chip externally (unless you know how to solder and know what pins to solder to).

Thanks for the much needed info. I truly don’t mind using the included transmitter but what I want to do is add servos for the gun elevation and turret rotation. I’m assuming I would need to get a different board? I’m running the 7.0 board.

Short answer. There is no known way to use your own TX with a 7.0 or 7.1 system.

To use your own TX you will need an aftermarket control system like a Clark, IBU, Open Panzer or Elmod.

Is it possible to plug a standard servo using the 7.0/7.1?

The 7.1 has servo ports. The 7.0 does not.

I have 2 FlySky 2.4 GHz radio systems which have become very inexpensive in recent years. I found the FlySky controller far superior to the HL transmitter at very similar price. Why no one makes a HL compatible receiver or converter for the FlySky radio? Is the problem technical or trade proprietary?

I have consider just replacing the gimbal control on the HL radio, but cannot find any information on what I need.

I know exactly why but have an NDA so I can't really say much other then at one point it was planned that the 6.1 (which is basically the same as the 7.1 but with four sounds) was going to be SBUS compatible, but this was never implemented (activated).

It is Heng Long's loss. They tossed away the opportunity to expand their market.

I typically spent $400-500 per tank. I represent the low end market hobbyist. There are tons of serious RC hobbyist who spend thousands of dollar per RC vehicle without blinking an eye. Heng Long need to make their radio system generically compatible with others.

How many servos can I operate with the 7.1? I’d like at least 2 servos. One for traversing and one for elevation. Would be nice to have 3 for the recoil too.

The HL TK7.1 MFU has 6 servo input ports. HL give very good instructions in a combined manual for TK-7.0/7.1. I have it in PDF file. PM me if you want to receive a copy by email.

The 7.1 has three servo ports that support servo use the others are not active.

Travers does not use a servo. The HL travers unit is actually pretty good (also upgradable) and is more less the industrial standard. The two main servos are used for recoil and elevation, the third is intended to smaller servo movement needs and has less range of operations built into the electronic signal.

To use all three you must have a 7.1 transmitter, NOT a 7.0 transmitter.

I agree the HL traverse motors are pretty decent and there are a bunch of different ones to tune how you want the rotation to act.

Not to be argumentative, but I will disagree with pretty much all of rest. The 7.1 does have 6 servo ports. All of them work.

CH5 is the port controlled by the 7.1 transmitter slider (trim slider on a standard transmitter) under the right stick. Technically since it can control a 360 servo, that could be used for a rotation servo, but I will say it wouldn't be a very good way to control the rotation of the turret.

CH3 and CH4 are for external ESC connections of which people have tested that function and it does work. I have plenty of 7.1 MFUs running on 7.0 transmitters and the servo recoil and servo elevation works fine with the 7.0 transmitter.

The only thing the 7.1 transmitter gets you is control of CH5 which folks are typically using for a CROWS/remote gun rotation or a CITV rotation. In some cases I've seen it wired up for a mine plow, a crane, a spade on artillery, rotating commander's cupola, or a troop door for an IFV.

There is a special "rotating" warning light that uses CH6. Rotating is in quotes because technically it doesn't rotate, it just flashes the LEDs in a sequence mimicking a rotation action.

This is valuable information thank you. I do think the stock traverse motor is great nothing wrong at all but I plan to stabilize both the turret and barrel. I just don’t see how that’s possible using the stock system. This is something I’m not fully understanding yet and I’m doing my research on this but this is my plan for my Abrams.

How can I purchase a TK7.1 transmitter. I have not been able to find any TK7.1 transmitter offer on the net. Most seller call their transmitter 7.0/7.1 which is not right.

I have had no problem binding the 7.0 transmitter to the 7.1 MFU to drive the tank. But both the recoil and elevation servo is acting weir. I am very frustrated.

The only thing I found was the combo on aliExpress. I didn’t know I had to purchase a proprietary radio for the 7.1.

I've purchased both of mine from Toucan. Ironically the second one is being shipped right now with 2 more TK7.1 boards. Though as mentioned by tank_me the TK7.1 servo recoil and elevation work just fine with a standard 7.0 transmitter. I only splurged for the 7.1 transmitters in case I ever wanted to use that little slide bar.

You only need the 7.1 if you are wanting to run a third servo. Motion RC had them not long ago.

Though as mentioned by tank_me the TK7.1 servo recoil and elevation work just fine with a standard 7.0 transmitter. I only splurged for the 7.1 transmitters in case I ever wanted to use that little slide bar.

Yes the 7.1 works with a 7.0 TX but if you want to use the third servo option you need to have a 7.1 TX.
