Heng long LegoDEI range issue help

Hello fellow commanders, my buddy and I finally tested our legoDEI units for the first time. It was a boat load of fun however our range seems to lack. It’s almost no different than using the stock heng long ir unit. Max distance was about 10-12 feet give or take. We played under a rooftop blocking direct sunlight. Also, his hits seemed to register more than mine. He does have some obstruction due to his FPV gimbal system but we tried testing shots from different angles and yet still my hits would only register 3 out of 10 shots fired. Is this normal? Anything beyond 10-12 feet and no hits will register.

I noticed his has two led’s in a 12-3-6-9 o’clock pattern. Mine only has a single led in the same pattern.

LegoDEI IR receiver has 3 versions. The one from MotionRC is version 2 which is widely used and receives hits better. Your friend probably bought the version 3 which is more for indoor and does not receive hits well. He needs to buy the version 2 in order to play with you fairly.

V2 -> V3 Changes:
Significantly Shorter Profile (height including mount): V3 is 0.5in / 13mm, V2 is 0.87in / 22mm.
Same Footprint/Diameter
Lower reflection sensitivity, slightly reduced detection range.
(Depends on emitter power, ~20% shorter range, example: 150ft -> 120ft, or 100ft ->80ft)

Well that makes sense as to why I’m barely able to register my hits. I was beginning to think my laser emitter was faulty.

While the V3 is designed with shorter range, it should not be to the degree you're describing. You're seeing even dramatically reduced ranges because your friend has the receiver mounted 45 degrees off the intended direction. The V3 should be mounted with the LEDs facing the 45 diagonals, not the cardinal directions. Your friend currently has it mounted with the leds facing 0 - 90 - 180 - 270, it should be 45-135-225-315. This will significantly improve the reception at longer ranges, since most of the time you're shooting at the enemy when their turret is facing directly at you. That said, if one of you is using the V2, and one of you using the V3, then whoever is using the V2 will be at a slight disadvantage especially at long range since the V2 is the more sensitive one of the two.

So just to clarify.

v2 direction 0-90-180-270 (cross pattern)
v3 direction 45-135-225-315 (x-pattern)

Since no one mentioned it. Make sure you are using the 360 degree sunshade on your V2 not the 45 degree sunshade that also comes with it. The 45 will greatly reduce angles at which a tank can be hit at when past about 10-15 ft.

V2 when using a 360 sun shade can be placed in any orientation when using a 360 degree shade. Just make sure it is not obstructed by any accessory parts and there is a clear line of sight at tank level to the receiver.

If you have a V3 just remove it and buy a V2. Save yourself the headaches.

Most of the clubs that have experience with the V2 and V3 do not allow the V3 receivers. There is a reason for this.

Forgive my ignorance but which one is the 360 shade?

Number one is the 360 number two is a blocked front don’t ever use that we don’t allow that at most clubs number three is a 45° and makes the tank very hard to hit past 10 to 15 feet
