  • Heng Long Servo Recoil Unit

    Hi All,

I’m new to this hobby and I have been upgrading a Heng Long T-72 I purchased. I saw how cool the servo recoil looked so I scooped up a metal Heng Long Servo recoil kit from eBay. This may have admittedly been a bit ambitious. I am having trouble making heads or tails of how to get it installed in the turret and being Heng long there are no instructions. I was wondering if anyone has done one of these and if so how you got it to fit. Any help / pictures would be much appreciated

Did you change the board? The stock TK7.0 MFU isn't plug and play with servos.

Chef is correct. Unless you have a 7.1 Heng Long board or another aftermarket board, servos won't work with the 7.0. They do make an adapter for the 7.0, but it's been sold out from the two vendors I know that carried them for almost a year.

Check your tank before buying any new hardware. If the BB shooting unit comes with a trigger motor, you have everything you need to implement barrel recoil. If not, you can replace the BB shooting unit with one having trigger motor.

Connect the trigger motor to CN6 port of the TK-7.0 motherboard. Set the body shaking recoil level to zero. You get trigger motor barrel recoil. The total cost is zero to less than $20.

Yes, the trigger motor barrel recoil is less realistic because it rebounds too fast, but it is a very inexpensive way to get yourself started. Some of the newer production HengLong RC tank already have trigger motor recoil activated. The majority of my RC tank (5 out of 8) have trigger motor barrel recoil implemented. I found it a 100 times better than the body shaking recoil. The servo recoil is better, but the cost of a new motherboard and the servo unit is out of proportion to the total tank cost.

I did change to a 7.1 board yes, just having a time and a half figuring out how I’m going to fit the servos to get them to work, worse comes to worse I have a plastic HL recoil unit and BB shooter module and the 7.0 board which can go back in if I totally can’t figure it out. Kind of going all out on this one, doing a paint job (going for a Ukrainian T-72 B) and have made quite a few cosmetic upgrades to make it more realistic. Wanted to do the servos to enhance the realism. Hopefully I can figure a way to get them in and working.

You may find my experience installing the servo recoil unit on the HL Leopard 2A6 useful. I have only a few tanks so I am a typical novice for this kind of thing.
I just receive this Metal Barrel Recoil Lifting System intended for my HL German Leopard 2A6 upgrade. https://www.ebay.com/itm/285657492181 (filedata/fetch?id=397263&d=1708189988) As expected, the unit does not come with any instruction or illustration. There are several servo recoil/elevation units on the market. It will be easier for you to get help if you post a picture and a link to the seller of your purchase.

              This unit?

Did you jump CN6? You'll need to.

I reread your original post. You're having an issue actually fitting the recoil/elevation servo unit into the turret? I have the recoil unit you are talking about so I thought getting that to work was your issue. But seems you are looking how to actually mount it? Hopefully someone with experience with that tank will chime in.

Yes that one, I did jump C6 got a slip ring kit for it, gonna have to figure out how to connect that too.

I used this Can Shui servo recoil/elevation unit on the HL Leopard2A6 turret. See Post #17 for the physical mounting position pictures.

For the HL Abrams M1A2 which does not have auto loading, I use a different recoil only unit. It keeps the original HL elevation unit that I prefer. It has a single 9G servo which I replaced with an all metal gear servo. This recoil only servo system is also more appropriate for WW2 and cold war era tanks.

The problem with those top actuated units is you loose depression which is important for IR battling and taking a hull down position.
with a 3d printed servo recoil like mine the back can elevate higher up before it hits the turret allowing more gun depression. I have even ground off the rear top corner of my own units on installing to allow even greater depression.

I ordered the Tongde servo metal barrel recoil unit for my M60A1 3 weeks ago and received it today. Still waiting for the dual current gearbox. I would like to hear the experience of anyone who has install the TD recoil unit.

I am still finishing the barrel recoil for the Abrams. The servo upgrade of the barrel recoil system took more effort than I expected. It required more drilling, grinding and cutting than I hoped for.

That TD unit is nicer than the henglong one. First time I have seen it.
Generally, on the m60a1/a3 variants it’s quite easy. You remove the airsoft gun and yank out the barrel. Use a round file to file the flat spot out of the hole so the barrel can slide in and out. Ready to go.

The scale barrel and recoil system I make for the TD M60a1/a3 comes all as one kit with the new scale barrel, inner brass tube, spacer and servo recoil unit with servo. It’s really easy to install as I’ve done all the hard work figuring out how to make it easy.

How is your project going? I assume your using the stock aluminum A3 type barrel the TD came with.

When I ordered parts for the M60A1 dual current gearbox upgrade, I saw this TD metal recoil and cannot resist the temptation. Order from Toucan US Warehouse takes a long time to deliver. The recoil unit is the first to arrive. Still waiting for the other items.

The servo barrel recoil upgrade is the secondary part in the project. I may get to it after the dual current upgrade. Yes, I plan to use the stock TD M60A1 barrel.

The dual current gearbox just arrived from Toucan. I ordered the all plastic version and the unit I received seems to be the all metal version. Will open it to verify later today.

I actually got the all plastic version I ordered and am trying to return it. I am concerned about the durability of the rubber belt used in the all plastic version. Toucan accepted the return request, but I have to pay the shipping cost both way. It is reasonable since I ordered the wrong version myself. I got 60% of my money back. Lesson learnt.
