Some time ago I adapted a TongDe PDSGS transmission or as TongDe calls it DCD "dual current drive" into one of my M60s. The TongDe DCD is a 48:1 ratio which is rather high torque output compared to the typical HL 36:1 gearboxes. This higher torque was great, but the M60 lacked scale speed above 25mph. Perfect for tight terrain turning, climbing or power through heavy brush. But just a bit to slow for the more open areas I typically run and battle the tank in.
So when the opportunity to get my hands on one of DKLM RCs newer PDSGS "high speed" transmissions I jumped at it. These have been out of stock for more than a year and when they came back into stock the DKLMRC was not shipping directly to customers in the US. That changed when RichJohnson Models N Stuff started working on the behalf of US customers to import directly from DKLMRC.
Well I received the new PDSGS transmission just a few days ago and swapped it into my M60. Fortunately the mounts TongDe used were copies of the original DKLM mounts so the new transmission slipped right in. About 10 minutes worth of work and the M60 was up and running.
Wow what a difference in performance. The DKLM transmission is much faster giving the M60 a more reasonable top end scale speed yet retaining all the low speed handling the M60 had before. Now I do have one of the older DKLM transmission in another M60, this newer version though is just a little nicer and seems to handle slightly better. Maybe because it is still so new and breaking in...time will tell.
Now I don't want anyone thinking that the TongDe transmission was not good. It was very good and I would definitely recommend them for someone looking to improve a WW2 era "heavy" tank as it would match the scale performances of that era better. I might reuse the TongDe transmission in one of my KVs or JS2. It would be perfect in one of those.
Above the new DKLMRC full metal transmission installed in M60. Super clean fit and slim profile.
Old TongDe transmission now needs a new home.
