  • FMS 1450mm P-51B Mustang Thread

I just bought and have flown this awesome warbird 3 times, and I love her! So I decided she needs her own discussion thread. I did not see one on this site which surprised me. So lets hear about your "B" model Mustang, what upgrades have you done, do you have any future upgrade plans? What do you think about this plane? Do you have any questions before you purchase this plane? Thanks for the replies and happy flying! :D

RE: FMS 1450mm P-51B Mustang Thread

I have to give it to the guys at Motion RC motionrc.com, two thumbs up for customer service! This morning I was going over my Mustang checking screws and flight surfaces making sure everything was secure when I noticed that the retract on the left wing looks cracked where the pin goes through to hold the strut (plastic is making a pyramid toward the front of the plane. I called Motion RC talked to Matt Maryan explained the issue, and with no questions asked is sending me a new retract. A few years back I got a FMS plane from Nitro Planes that had an issue right off the bat, I called them and they more or less told me that it was my problem and would not back their product so I had to buy the part (the part was defective out of the box). The experience with NP more or less killed me for online hobby shops. In fact had I not wanted This version of this plane I would not have bought online. Thanks to this experience with Motion RC my confidence has been renewed, I will definitely be doing more business with them again! Thanks Motion RC!!!

      Welcome Stoopidmonkey !

Nice flying , what a beautiful place .

MRC is like no other hobby shop or store , not quite sure what category they are in . You will find that they stand behind everything they offer . Anyone you talk with is always very nice and you don't get that " why are you calling " feeling . The more you look thru this Forum you'll notice that they are reading and listening to what people say . They truly care and will always help .

Again Welcome , we are all just flying junkies here and will try to help when you have a problem , and fell free to help when you see one .

My plane crashed today! From the look of things the BEC on the factory ESC was either poorly soldered on, or the ESC got hot and the BEC came off. Either way my plane lost power to the RX thus I lost control of my plane, and it did a nose down spiral straight into the ground. I have done no mods to the plane, and fly with the Admiral 4s 3600mah 40c batteries I bought with the plane from Motion RC. Wanna talk about feeling helpless, nothing like watching a plane with 4 batteries through it fall out of the sky and not know what or why it happened. I am deeply saddened by today's events. However the wonderful people at Motion RC are investigating the matter; and I am sure they will do what is right, as this crash clearly was of no fault of mine.

Thank you for the warm reception to the forum.

RE: FMS 1450mm P-51B Mustang Thread

              Greetings from the Pacific NW,

I bought my first aircraft from NP as well, came defective right out of the box. When I called I was put on hold for 15+ minutes long distance, just to wast my breath for another 15+ minutes. I am going to say it! NP SUCKS! Found Grayson Hobby as my new Dynam dealer at that time. Then I was trashing NP at the field one day and a friend said, Have you checked out MRC? I said who? Got all the info and took a chance. For the last 2 years now MRC has been my ONE STOP SHOP for all my hobby needs. They back there product and have parts for the planes they sell. Sure theres has been a hic up once in while, nobody is perfect 100% of the time. But when ever theres been a problem which have been far and few in between, They took care of me. They value the customer sincerely. MRC is the ELITE in there customer service and I wont order from any where else. I cant say enough on there customer care and the products they sell. What I really like is the ON LINE CHAT FEATURE, What other company can you talk live to in a chat room and get your Q's answered RIGHT NOW! Really saves on the long distance phone bill. Yep I'm a little old school.

Anways WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME to the MRC family experience. You wont be disappointed, and theres alot of great info on the forum, Happy Landings   P.S, I have the P51D 1450mm, and the P51 Strega. Great aircraft. The B model is on my wish list. Coming home to me soon.

Oh man, that's disappointing! It looked great in the video! Was it totaled? Was the ESC really hot still when you got to it? I think I heard you on your video say that you had had some glitches previously to that flight? Related maybe?

The plane is in pretty bad shape, and no the way the plane acted the first flight and what happened today was totally different. i was able to control the plane on maiden and as you can see on the video I worked the bugs out of it. The BEC came disconnected from the ESC on this flight. I did not get to the ESC until I was home. Ill try to post pictures.

Man Sean.... That's such a bummer. I hate losing planes or multirotors or helis. Especially after just 4 flights. God knows I smacked about a zillion wings and things over 40 years, especially heli's. I just stink at those. LOL! I'd be interested in hearing the outcome of your investigation since I have the same plane? :)

Well Lauren I have been reading through the rcgroups forum; and from what I have read, there are quite a few people who have had issues with the ESC and or Motor. Some are just replacing the ESC with a 100a and external BEC, others are replacing both the motor and ESC again using the 100a but either upgrading to a 550, or 580kv. These motors they are using are still FMS motors So we can still use our 4 blade prop and spinner. I think back to my 1400mm Skytrainer from FMS and even on that plane I had nothing but issues with the electronics. Another thing I'm wondering is if the glitching I was experiencing on my maiden actually was from the ESC, and I just thought I fixed it with a radio fix. Who Knows I have a friend with a spectrometer I took my radio to his house and my radio is puting out well over 150Mw of transmit power so there is no reason I should loose signal, or have any signal interruptions. I am 100% positive this crash was due to the faulty ESC.

Sounds like it Sean.... I'm sure Motion will do you right. They did with my sons Dynam Corsair which came with a bad retract... I'm beginning to think that going to an uprated ESC on all electrics is a wise move as many brands have the same issues and an external BEC seems to be a better idea as well because then you don't have a single point of failure. Better you have a motor drop out and still have the radio to glide the plane in with ya know? I think I might do that on mine too. I did it with my Range RV Jet just for safety since the thing is so big.

I dont like to "bang on" or place blame, however things are what they are. I will be getting rid of the FMS ESC (well I have no choice at this point). I am wondering if the Turbojet ESCs are any good? or what is the recommended ESC... time for more reading and questions.....

I found this, but I feel 100A may be over kill.

RE: FMS 1450mm P-51B Mustang Thread

I will haft to admit, This is crazy. I've been flying FMS birds for over 2 years now. Over haft my fleet is FMS. The only problems I've ever had is with the FMS 9g plastic gear servos. I have never had an ESC or motor failer in any of my FMS birds. They dont even get warm and I fly hard. I have the following FMS line up in my hanger.

                                182 Sky Trainer, 1450mm Ridge Runner P51 Mustang, 1450mm F4U Corsair, 1100mm P51 Strega, 1450mm P40 War Hawk, 1450mm Petie 2 P51 Mustang, Edge 340, Dynam Su26 with FMS 70 amp ESC installed.

Now I know we dont live in a perfect world, and I'm very sorry that your ESC failed. I have had an ESC failer in another aircraft of a different brand. All I'm saying is that I believe FMS makes a good product, and if there product had a reputation of failing all the time. MRC I believe wouldnt be selling it. Dont let one bad apple ruin your barrel of apples. Always do your home work and read reviews, which sounds like you do. One other tip is always consider the source of who's doing the reviews. I have read reviews that were simply not true.

Lastly I know as hobby lovers, we are always searching for up grades. Upgrades are good. My flag ship is getting a ESC and Motor up grade very soon, But not because the current set up is junk. I like to fly fast and hard as we practice combat manuvers and play tag with our war birds at our local field. In my quest to be #1, I need some better performance. So the mantis 85 amp ESC and the FMS 580kv motor should get me there. I'm just a tick slow.

Hope this helps you in your fun and perspective of what to expect from FMS. I know there not the best, but by far there not the worst. Happy Landings from the Pacific NW

Oh I hear ya, I think you just got a dud to. For me the proof is in the pudding. I saw your video, your a good flyer and that video is going to help you with MRC. Considering the source thing I mentioned. Yea I've heard other people say things about the V1 Ski Trainer to. I have the V2. The only problems were those dumb 9g plastic gear servos. I'm going to say it! There junk! LOL

this is the video documenting what is all broken on my Mustang, also showing that the ESC will still work if the "black box" BEC was still on it.
