Hello all, I'm looking for some suggestions for weathering my P-40, I am removing the stock decals and replacing them with decals to replicate the FHC's P-40. I don't have an airbrush so was thinking about using powdered graphite which works well fro exhaust marks and gun streaks but not so well for panel lines. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!1 Photo

Yep, I have to agree, it wheel hubs look awesome, I'll have to look into that.
As for weathering without an airbrush, I'm thinking you could do it with card board (like the kind they make cars out of) and a very weak black acrylic. Lay the cardboard across the panel line and paint off of it towards the trailing edge. Use a hair dryer carefully ( as in 'on low) to dry the paint and see what you think, again I caution being careful with the dryer.
The whole idea of weak paint is to build it in layers. It will be a longer process, but it should work. Try it on something else first, a spare or broken wing to get the feel of it. Really, its much easier with an airbrush. I was hesitant, but once I got into it, its a great side hobby!!
Shangrila was my first effort, check it out

Wow Grossman, that does look nice, I used to airbrush 1/48 models so I have a compressor but the nozzle is cracked so that's why I was looking for an alternative. I was thinking about using graphite powder but it doesn't stick in panel lines too well, I now have to consider getting a new nozzle or a whole new airbrush because that look spectacular!

Its really the way to go. I picked up a Masters G58 (?) or G59 something like that, on Amazon, it came with three different needles , good deal for the money.
I learned as I went along. I converted Iron Ass to Old Crow and recently, weathered my new P40B using cardboard along the panel lines just as I described, check it out.
Don't hesitate to ask, glad to help.

Maiden and one additional flight completed today with no issues at all. I only have 1 lipo for it (most of my stuff runs on 6S), but have more on the way. What a great flyer, and she really turned heads at the field! I learned that you really have to ease into the throttle and get on the rudder on takeoff as she wants to torque left. Landings were silky smooth with half flaps, and no nose over on my bumpy dirt runway!Pat

I got my P-40 today!! Super excited about this plane! Will post pics of my weathering (no airbrush needed LOL) and sliding canopy tomorrow! Thanks to Brandon Moon for the sliding canopy instructions and Grossman for the weathering inspiration! FYI, Powdered Graphite Lube works just like airbrushing a plane, except it's hand applied and wipes off with water!

Cool Warbird, glad it worked out for you, we each find our own way, whatever works for you, go for it. I saw a video where the guy used 'dirty water' just a bit of paint and a lot of water, and applied then rubbed it off to dirty up the rivet and panel lines. Good method to try as well.Originally posted by Warbird04329 View PostI got my P-40 today!! Super excited about this plane! Got my hub caps painted last night. Just sized the image to fit over the hub and cut one section out, traced it, rotated it to the next position and traced again. Applied the paint (I used the good old Wally World acrylics)one color/layer, over to the wife's hair dryer, another layer, over to the wife's hair dryer, about three times for every color. Started with the blue and then the red finally the white. Looks good and really stands out, I'm surprised they didn't supply the proper decal for this right from the factory
