Great video Gman. I've already got an old wing off of an 800mm p51 to practice on. So come on Aros. There has to be other ways to accomplish the same thing. Show us some of your methods also. I'd really seeing a plane clear coated also. Brush and spray. Also the prep work. I'm sorry guys. I just realized I'm asking a lot. Surely there's some others that would be willing to share also.

Hey Dewey, sounds like you've got a lot of enthusiasm! That's great my friend!!
Now, as for clear coating, this is what I currently use, I've tried Minwax but I like the results I get with Varathane better. I use a foam brush to apply, I've tried spraying it, not thinned, but you had best be in a well ventilated area. I give it a light coat and look for beading, if I see any, I'll take a microfiber cloth and rub the surface with it. The beading is caused by the mold release, which is oil based, Varathane (and Minwax) are water based, so they gather the oil up into beads, by using the cloth, you remove the beads, the oil is contained within them. This will leave a sheen of Varathane on the surface, let it dry for 5-10 minutes then reapply, it will be fine this time, however, if you should see more beading, just repeat. The only time I run across excessive beading is on a plane that hasn't been painted from the factory, such as the Pandoras.
I had an interesting time today as there was a slight dent in one area of the wing, so I fill the dent with Varathane and used a hair dryer to help it set while watching for any runs,. It actually did a very good job, hmmm.....

That's your clear coat Aros, over everything! I use it for helping to seal in the decals. but it also puts a great glossy coat on the plane as well. Doc and I have been pushing this for a while now, Doc, we should look into a franchise!!. Its made for outdoor use and has a UV protectant in it, and water based so its easy to clean up afterwards. A lot of guys airbrush it on, I prefer a foam brush, or fir smaller areas I'll get out a good paint brush from my Acrylic painting supplies (acrylic as in artist paint)
It adds strength and if you wanted to fiber glass you could use it for that as well. Try it, you'll like it.

Good news about the decals! Next time I'm heading that way, I'll have to thro Old Crow in the back of the truck and we can have a Squadron reunion!

On the clear coat, what if you don't want a glossy finish, but a matte like many warbirds would have (flat OD for example)?

I've used Minwax satin on Shangrila, but what you can do is use a bit of acrylic paint, mixed with the satin Minwax and it will dull it down even more. I used the Minwax as a glaze in that case rather than a clear coat. It looks pretty good!

Also, if you really want to get down and dirty, I used a VERY thin coat of white flat base coat to alter some to the color on the nose upper panels. This hardly adds any color, but helps dull it down even more

Thank you gman. I will go and look for the varathane. On trips to Lowe's while in a work day I have looked for it briefly and have not seen it. Of coarse I was in a hurry knowing I had to get back to the job and boss. I'll definitely go this weekend and look carefully.
Yes I am very pumped about doing things to my planes now other than just fly them. What better way to learn than to go to experience. We have a guy in our club that does great work but he only comes out once in a very long time and sometimes I'm not even there when he is but for some reason he doesn't like to share much. Honestly just recently I've gotten the bug and I can't shake it off. Shopping for a spray system now. Thanks for helping me though. The information is being put into practice and I hope that soon I can post a picture that the ones that have lead me can be proud of.

All the decals for Glam' Glenn have been applied...Looks great. I painted over the nose decal and numbers and I am quite pleased with how you can't even see the ridges of the old decals with the new decals on top. If this were a larger, more expensive bird I would have taken the time to remove the old decals properly but I am really pleased with how it turned out. The spinner meant for Old Crow (which is the same as the Glam' Glen livery uses) arrives tomorrow and then she will be complete. Photos sometime tomorrow, weather permitting.

Which, living in the Pacific Northwest, I seem to say that a lot. :@

Hey Mr Grosman. When you apply the varathaine. Do you coat right over the canopy or work around it. I haven't had a chance to maiden my F6F yet so I figured what better plane to start with.

I don't paint the clear coat over the canopy, I use Maquires Plastx instead.

Hey looks good Aros, your almost done, a little work around the guns and the exhausts stacks and you're done with the paint. Now, what I would suggest is to get a set of the nomenclature decals from Callie as well, she gives you more than enough to really dress up the plane, really adds to the realism.

Its pretty easy, the trigger controls the amount of air and the little knob under the paint bowl controls the paint, the knob at the back of the gun can be used so you can only pull the trigger back so far. Looks like another video!!
