  • Gman the only big Mustang I've had any experience with was a v7 fms all stock and I thought it was to under powered to even fly. I did the zip tie mod and it helped a little but was still more an exercise of not crashing than flying. I think I put a 14 inch two blade on and was able to fly it but still pretty slow. It seems to me that the 650 is what should be the stock part. I bet you're gonna really like it. I'm assuming that you have to cut flight times or use bigger batteries to fly 6 minutes or so.

    • Well, I upgraded BBD to a 580kv and an 85a Mantis ESC, she flies great, but the FMS doesn't weigh all that much. Shangrila got Old Crow's old set up and she's even lighter than BBD, it literally jumps in the air.
So, I'm expecting great things from Old Crow with a 650 kv and an 85A ESC.

        • Yes, that's the one. You have to get the motor mount as well as the bolt pattern the attaches the motor to the motor mount is different

Thank you sir, looking forward to your report how that works for ya, I already bought the 85A ESC to run the zip-tie mod on the stock motor, but haven't tried it as the bullet connectors were different. Got the 4mm connectors now so I'll see how that works first.

            • I ran across that as well, I talked to Lon at NEFI and he was pretty sure he had to change the bullet connectors to run into the stock 580kv. He also runs 5s batteries with that setup, that's worth trying as well if you can purchase a 5s battery. Motion has one.

              • Hi Grossman56....I came across your post about the P51 and using Varathane. I have a P51 800mm that I purchased from Nitro Planes. I was looking for a replacement motor but they are out of stock.
Do you have any suggestions as to which RC shops other than Nitro Planes might also carry any Spare parts for the P51??. I thank you for any suggestions you might have...Ron Grimard (Maine)

                • Hello RonG and welcome to the Squawk,
I'm gonna jump in here for Gman since he's a bud and I know he wouldn't mind me helping resolve your problem since I'm also one of the electrical mod contributors on this forum.
First, the Mustangs that Gman has are double the size your inquiring about which he most likely is not up to speed with your particular case question.
The 800mm Airfield P-51 back a couple years ago was a rebranding label on the FMS product for Nitro Planes.
In reviewing the specs for your plane the stock power system was a 3S 11.1v 800mAh LiPo powering a 3128-1300kV motor via 20A ESC.
If these specs that NP published are true then the motor from the discontinued FMS 750mm Zero has the correct motor can sizing but the kV is higher by 250 because it ran on 2S.
This is all that Motion has in that size footprint(which is perfect) & relative kV range.

As far as an alternative RC shop to Nitro Planes that carries Airfield your basically out of luck on that.
Best of luck on your repairs,
                  Warbird Charlie
