I saw this bird in the MotionRC eMail this morning......was not listed on the website yet. Later in the morning it was listed on the website......the price a little lower than the other BH 88.9inch warbirds complete with electric retracts, struts and wheels.

by 9:35pm there were two left ......at 9:38 there is one left......my order went through

                Betting on this bird........

My local club has an active membership with a host of master builders......older now and getting increasingly more "crotchety" - LOL , the idea of flying an ARF was simply despised....recently however the newer Black Horse models 89inch Corsair, 102 inch FW-190, 89inch P-47, 93.8inch Zero have proven to be excellent flying models.....exceptional flyers. While the master craftsmen, having no love for the pre-printed weathered covering, have acknowledged the flight performance far outweighs the disdain to the coverings. I suspect the light wing loading of these BH models are much more nimble in flight than some older kits and scratch built monsters weighing in at 30-40lbs.....these new large BH models are considered "floaters" by some.....until they fly them themselves......

Noting there are discrepancies of wingspan and wing loading in their respective Assembly manuals and MotionRC technical info on the website - here is a comparison of Wingspan / Wing Area / Wing Loading:

                P-47:
                88.9inch Wingspan / 96.47dm2 Wing Area / 120gdm2 Wing Load

                A6M Zero:
                93.8inch Wingspan / 99.5dm2 Wing Area / 108.5 gdm2 Wing Load

                ME BF 109G:
                90.5inch Wingspan / 90.2dm2 Wing Area / 95.34gdm2 Wing Load

                F4U-1D Corsair:
                89.7inch Wingspan / 94.6dm2 Wing Area / 93.02gdm2 Wing Load

                eCalc numbers show as follows:
                Set up:
                26.5lbs all up weight
                12s 8000mAh 100c Lipo
                Castle 160amp ESC
                180Kv motor
                12x22 XOAR PJN

                Watts per lb: 184 w/lbs
                Stall speed: 34mph
                Top Speed: 81mph
                100% Throttle Amps: 110amps
                72% throttle: 50amps
                72% throttle: 61mph
                72% throttle: 8min flight time
Motor Case Temps: Exceeds 180f degrees at or near 80% throttle

Looks to me we will have to find a way to cool the electric motor by opening up the cowling and pull in some air !!!!!

I am hoping this Me BF 109G flies as well as the other models !!!!

BF109's did not have a retractable tail wheel.

For those new to Black Horse models lately.....

The airframe is constructed internally of Fiberglass sandwiched plywood....the fuselage I think is sheeted balsa with a resin coated backing, which is covered in the pre-printed vinyl. The wings are Fiberglass sandwiched plywood ribs and bracing with the wing chords covered in sheeted balsa but not resin backed, covered in the pre-printed vinyl.

The production glue looks like Hysol, due to the milky white appearance and hard finish.....but no way to know what glue is used

This makes a very rigid but lightweight airframe.

The wings on this model use a captive clamp in the wing to compress onto short aluminum rods to fasten onto the fuselage wing saddle.....this will make field assembly really easy.

The pre-printed vinyl covering is nicely scale detailed - not overly done - IMO should present nicely in the air.

It ships with three motor box options - one for electric and two for wet fuel motors selections

Bits and hardware parts are bagged separated and labeled for the associated installation

The wings employ two aluminum wing tubes close together - which is probably designed to support the narrow landing gear, while the horizontal stab uses a wing tube for bolt on installation also.

I am hoping some one post up thier flight performance opinion soon.....very curious of course to read how this model flies in comparison to the P-47, AM6 Zero, F4U Corsair

The assembly begins tonight.....may take me a couple weeks to get this bird flight ready

TwistedGrin are you going gas or electric? I think I'm going with a DLE55RA.

Another question is this model really a 1/6 scale. If I'm doing the math correctly??? I'm roughly coming up with 4.39 as the scale (1/4)

I'm going to order a few extra decals from Callie. So I'm trying to figure out what scale to actually order from her?

I am going electric set up same as my Hanger9 Oscar, BH F4U Corsair......180Kv 60cc motor / 160amp ESC / Dual 6s LiPo in series for 12S power / 22x12 XOAR prop

eCalc online application software is usually pretty close to physical values and is showing the following:
                              Watts per lb: 184 w/lbs
                              Stall speed: 34mph
                              Top Speed: 81mph
                              100% Throttle Amps: 110amps
                              72% throttle: 50amps
                              72% throttle: 61mph
                              72% throttle: 8min flight time
Motor Case Temps: Exceeds 180f degrees at or near 80% throttle

Yes I am concerned about the motor heat......will have to fly it and take temp readings at landing to know for sure. One way to reduce heat is to reduce the load on the motor usually by reducing prop size....however eCalc is providing data that a lower size prop most likely will stall early and also cavitate stall at higher throttle ranges....of course moving to a larger prop size increase the load on the motor and increases the heat.....in Texas 110degrees.....ya heat is an issue for the larger electric birds

                                ADVISORY NOTICE: Elevator Servo Size

For those of us that did not pay attention to the Assembly manual and after have received the model.....the elevator servos are mounted in the horizontal Stabilizer....thus the size is limited to the opening and servo mount.....the assembly manual plainly states the model requires "2 standard hight torque servos (size 35 x 15)mm elevator

Looking into HiTech products it looks like the best Analog fit is the HS-5085Mg and the best Digital fit is the D-85Mg (size 29x13x30)mm

MotionRC Website does not mention the different size servo required for this model on the WebSite.

ADVISORY NOTICE UPDATE: Elevator Servo Recommendation

"This is a large heavy model and you may be better off using the following servo on the elevator...."

Hitec HS-7245MH High Voltage High Torque Digital Metal Gear Mini Servo

I'll be using Analog servo on my other surfaces....so limited to 6.0v....this means the Elevator servo may be limited to about 5.2 kg/cm (72.21 oz/in) tork.

The recent Black Horse as well as Phoenix models internal structure bracing and ribs are plywood sandwiched with a fiberglass layer on both sides as noted above in an earlier post. The pre-printed covering is vinyl not - Monocote - so it is very different. The fuselage is a thin layer of balsa that is backed by a layer of printed resin perhaps.....the main wings don't have this inside layer on the balsa sheeting. I have no idea how the vinyl covering removes in large areas.....but for small sections that require epoxy directly to the balsa.....it comes off without the use of heat.
