I’m wondering anyone here is using the visaton FRS7 full range speaker. I want to up my game on the sound of my tanks particularly my leopard/abrams and merkava. They seem to have room. Will I need to use an amplifier? Or does it sound good without one? I won’t mind using an amp but I don’t know how to to wire it up. Any help is appreciated.

I built my own speaker using "Dayton Audio PC68-4 2-1/2" Full-Range Poly Cone Driver". It is cheaper and has a larger magnet.

These 2.5" speaker comsume very little power. The MFU built-in amplifier is more than adequate for them. In fact, these 2.5", in either the DKLM or my home built vented enclosure, are more efficient than the HL 1". I actually turn down the volume using the radio. A vented loudspeaker box is the key.Comment

Sweeet. I ordered one now the only thing I’m concerned about is fitting it into my leopard and Abrams. The tub now has torsion bars so I may need to get creative. Thanks keilauComment

What do you use for speaker enclosure? A vented enclosure will help keep the efficiency high.
The worst mounting is an open back mounting. You lost the backside acoustic energy completely and effectively half the speaker efficiency. Without acoustic loading of the driver, the bass frequency rolls off too early that the diesel engine's low frequency rumbling is lost. The HL 1" speaker box will sound better than an 2.5" open mounted speaker.Comment

As far as I know I can use styrene or wood. Maybe acrylic I don’t know. Did you have any trouble fitting yours in your tank? Assuming you have torsion bar suspension?Comment

In the original HL Leopard2A6 chassis with coil spring suspension, the battery compartment took up much of the space. It is difficult, if not impossible, to fit a 2.5" loudspeaker.
I added the 2.5" loadspeaker after I upgraded to the Torro all metal chassis. I use velcor to fix the components to the floor plate over the torsion bars.

I used 2mm plastic card, to make the speaker enclosure, in my Tamiya Leopard 1, which has torsion bars. The enclosure has cotton wool in it to aid sound.Comment

Floor plate. Great idea. Would it be difficult and worthwhile to add a 15 watt amplifier between the speaker and MFU? Would it be a bad idea to tap into the power leads to power the amplifier? Or should I use a BEC or something?Comment

Since DKLM currently do not ship to the US, I made the loudspeaker enclosure out of plastic project box from Amazon. I was able to find the smallest project box (100 x 68 x 40 mm) that can fit inside the Abrams V2 chassis and still house the 2.5" speaker. The box is much sturdier than the DKLM enclosure. I lined it with 3M vibration damper. It is important to use an vented loudspeaker enclosure to enhance the efficiency and the low bass.

For the Abrams which has a gas turbine engine, the HL 1" speaker is working fine. For other MBT with diesel engine, I like the low frequency rumbling that the 2.5" speaker in a good enclosure provides.
I preferred the Dayton Audio PC68-4 2-1/2" Full-Range Poly Cone Driver because it has a 77Hz vented F3. By comparison, the Visaton FRS7-4 2.5" Full-Range Speaker has 175Hz vented F3. Don't get me wrong, I am not building HiFi speaker system, but try to capture as low a bass as possible using small driver for diesel engine sound.
An outboard higher power amplifier will have no impact on how the speaker sounds in the RC tank.

Im wondering, for how small and inexpensive a 15 watt amplifier is would it be worth trying? I saw that rc tank legion had on his website a 15 watt amp and a dc/dc converter. If I can squeeze a little more performance I think it would be e worth the effort.Comment

I will slow my pace a bit and just try it without the amp. But eventually I will try with an amp to get some performance out of it. Of course I will share my results. I got my abrams running on 3s. Absolutely no heat to the motors (390) or the MFU. I’m also in 95+ degree weather in south Florida. I will send a link to my video if anyone wants to see out of curiosity. It’s just for fun. 2s with 390 motors is plenty.

Yea I have a feeling the Abrams will be more challenging. But like you said the turbine sound is good enough for the stock speakers. Hey have a look at my t72 with VFX sound effects.

Well I completed the installation of the dayton speaker along with the project box you linked to me keilau and I am impressed. The results were amazing. A significant improvement. It’s so much louder that I had to turn down the volume. It really has a more presence in its appearance just due to the sound. I couldn’t thank you enough. I may experiment with an amp just out of curiosity. I wish I could show it on video but videos do not do it justice. Something that must be heard in person. Again THANK YOU. (The tank I installed it in was my leopard. I moved the MFU to the front and placed the box where the MFU used to be)
