Took her out for the sop****re sortie at the school. It's not like me but I didn't balance my props and it sure shows in the video. I promptly balanced them when I got home, but not before having to search like mad for a spare prop as one of mine broke after the landing. I was trying to taxi it back to me when it hit a divet (the soccer field isn't the most manicured I've seen) and tipped on its nose and broke a blade.
DOH!!
I hate it when that happens. :dodgy:
I see we're out of stock of the props (both Iron Ass and Old Crow) but I was able to find two spares from my original Iron Ass, buried under a ton of other props I've been hoarding in a garage drawer. Lucky!
I then painted the tips (I don't like the yellow tone of FMS and Freewing stock blades, it's too canary yellow...I like a touch of orange in my yellow tips like the full scale) and balanced. Still getting her dialed in but she flies great! I need to do the prop mod though as I wouldn't mind to squeek out a few more horses.
:D

He means the girl, not the plane.........
Yeah, I forgot to warn you, Freewing stock depends on where the prop sales are for this month so beware, they break easily. FMS stock on the other hand is based on Pitts prop sales, which I personally contributed to in the beginning.
On the lighter side, the new decals from Callie are on the way, I also ordered the hornet decals for Pandora Two.
Then I've been ordered to hold up on the spending. The wife quit her job and doesn't want to get another one until we get back from Wisconsin in mid June, so.:dodgy::(
So I'll have to be a good little:angel:and play with the toys I have for now.
Nice F 86 Lon! I'm heading for your neighborhood the second week of June.:D

Awesome...I have my Glamorous Glenn decals coming from Callie soon...I need to buy the old crow spinner since it already has the yellow stripe on it (and I'm too lazy to try to paint one on my existing)... ;)

Took her out yesterday and apparently it was much windier than I thought. Wind gusts easily over 30mph after I took off. I can now report how she fairs in high winds:
Like a kite made of popsicle sticks. :D

Yes, we'll be in Shawano from Monday June 6 til Thursday June10, then off Friday morning, it looks as though your about 5 hours drive from there. I'm trying to get ahold of Ryan to see if he's around that weekend, I was thinking we all could get together somewhere in the neighborhood. I would like to hit Muncie and see AMA HQ and take a spin at their field, but nothing is written in stone except I have to be back at work on the 20th.Originally posted by Lon View Post

Anyone else interested in getting together is more than welcome, please post either here or on the events thread Motion R/C Fly In, unofficially but hey, sounds like a good name!!

Starting the transition of getting her ready for Glam' Glenn...After painting the sides and getting rid of the red from the cowl back, I couldn't stand looking at the "Red Nose Reindeer" so I painted the spinner and backplate silver as well - just until my Old Crow spinner and Callie decals arrive.

Hey great start Aros, isn't that Iron Ass decal a lot of fun to remove!
When I did Old Crow, I just left the plastic forward fuse area red as the decal fits perfectly over it.
I managed to pull the decal with scotch tape, heat and some goof off (very sparingly as I didn't want it soaking into the foam.) I wrote the paint code for the antiglare panel in the paint code thread under painting tips and tricks, its a perfect match if you want to straighten out the green.
So, now on to the Squadron letters. Freewing decals are installed very well. I ended up just leaving the stars and bars and keeping the ones Callie sent me as spares as they've just go onto the same spot anyway.
Good luck my friend, I kinda like the silver prop hub, reminds my of Tuskegee Airmen when the first go the P51s before they painted them up in red, a factory finish!!
Oh, btw, your next step might be the stripes, so here's my method, Frog Tape Delicate worked great, no paint was lost during the making of these stripes.

Thanks for the tip on the stripes! I usually use the time trusted blue painter's tape but I'm always on the lookout for even better tape. Finished the sun glare shield section painting over the stock glossy OD with Testor's flat OD. Looks much better...On to the stripes today!

Oh so much fun!!! I know when I painted the invasion stripes there was some question as to the historical accuracy because Bud was still flying a P51B on June 6, 1944. But I chalked it up to being true to the times and put them on anyway, the main reason being that they stand out so well (as was the original purpose on D Day) and for a silver bird, by the time you get the invasion stripes black and white, the green anti glare shield the red and yellow squares around the nose and the red tail and spinner, they're pretty colorful for a silver bird!
The Freewing stock paint is tough as nails, I've never had any lift from laying tape on it, did you find the same?
Looks great Aros, keep us posted!
BTW, give us all a little info on your method of removing those letters
Oh yeah, got finished riveting the top of the wings on mine last night, there's a job, but it looks great once its done, I'll have to see if I can get a decent picture of that, stay tuned.......
