The sneaking it in is easy, in my case, she's right there at the field with me, and she knows every plane I have. Hard enough trying to get away with modding the ones I have.
Aren't those four blade props a joy? There's always one that's super heavy! I usually get that one fairly close to balance using electrical tape on the back of the prop and sanding down the heavy one. Then go to the next two. I have used CA on the back as well, but found that electrical tape works well. Heck, I even had to cover the yellow tip with yellow E tape just to get this one to balance. It worked though.
Funny, no ones ever come up with a video to my knowledge on balanced the four bladed monsters. Anyone ever seen such a thing?

Ive got Iron Ass w/sound and had the FMS P-51 (Petie) IA seemed to have a bit more power...getting the CG right wasnt easy..the name says it all..but I liked both. Petie tracked as if on rails..but then again..IA does too once you get it dialed in. Cant go wrong either waywww.TSHobbies.com

I have IA with sound done up in Old Crow colors as well as Big Beautiful Doll. Big Beautiful Doll, in my opinion, flies easier, but of course she's lighter. Now IA comes with a 580kv motor where BBD comes with a 540kv. Both seemed to have about the same get up and go. I upgraded BBD to a Mantis 85A ESC and a 580kv and changed out the clevises to a ball link system and also bought the Small Parts CNC aluminum sides for the retracts. This makes for a very impressive bird. IA with sound, to me, needed a bit more poke, so I got a 650kv motor and an 85A ESC for her, still hasn't been in the air as of yet.
Now, I had a brief maiden flight on my new IA without sound yesterday which, let me say right off, ended in a complete right off of the plane. She took off fine and I probably flew for 2- 3 minutes, dropped the gear to try some slow flight in preparation to land and something went wrong, I have my theories, but the result was the same!
Now, she performed just beautifully up until... the only thing I noticed is that I had the battery back about a quarter inch and she was tail heavy, not a lot, but a bit. I trimmed her up and she flew fine, so I would suggest that you put the battery all the way forward.
I have parts ordered to rebuild her as I feel she has a lot of potential, fortunately, all the internal workings survived.

Yes, its sucks, even if I have three more!
Still, I have the parts to rebuild on the way, thank God for understanding wives!
Two theories, first a brown out, which I don't like believing, and second, I found out afterwards that just on the other side of the hill, is a gravel pit and she was sitting right in the middle of it. There was a breeze blowing and I'm thinking I may have got into a vortex spinning around the pit, which would explain the sudden loss of lift and the inability to pull up from the resulting dive. Either way, the result was the same, I also lost the battery as the front end of it got bent up a bit. She's holding a charge, but I don't trust anything that's not 100%. That's why I'm replacing the AR610 with a seven channel receiver with an extended second aerial, I have them in two of my other Mustangs and they work well.
So, tonight's project is to go through everything and make sure its serviceable. I'm pretty sure it is, but I want to be 100% sure.
Again, the plane flew beautifully albeit a little tail heavy to my mind. Nothing that a quick battery adjustment wouldn't have solved.
Now, this time, I wrapping it in Ultracoat (Chrome) and it should look outstanding!!

Wow Gman.
Hate to read the habituary notice. I had just about the same thing happen with my HZ Corsair about 4 months ago. It was flying great and I came into the bottom of a roll at low throttle and was leveled off and then all of a sudden it spun around and went straight into the ground. I think the only reason I didn't sustain as much damage as you did was because I hadn't gotten back into the throttle yet. New cowl ,prop, canopy and horizontal and she's flying perfect again. We have a lot of problems with what we call dust devil's and I think that's what got me. If I'd been back on the throttle I might have flown out of it. Anyhow good luck with the rebuild and keep us posted on the ultracoat.Dewey l

Will do, I got one half of the horizontal stab done and it doesn't look too bad, its a little tricky, especially when the only iron I have is...the iron, as in clothes.
And the wife's hair dryer!
I called it a night, I want to stay on my edge on this and not get sloppy.

Anyone have an idea how many amps the 4258 580kv Old Crow motor draws on 5S batteries on either prop?
The FMS version draws about 70 amps on 5S with a 550kv 4258 motor. I'm hoping I could run Old Crow on the stock motor on 5S an a 100 amp or less ESC, as I have 3300s 5S batteries that should fit.

Mizer, for what it's worth. I'm starting my 3rd flying season with the IronAss. I have been running a 3300 5s with 85a ESC. No issues..hundreds of flights.Lon

Ok, so I changed my mind! I thought of using Ultracote and tried it in the horizontal stab, it was okay, but the wrinkles were a challenge and generally, it was okay, but not great. I checked out Oracal, but there were no pictures of what I was buying and I hesitate to have another roll of something that wasn't what I wanted. I've eyeballed the results you get with Flite Metal for a while now and its beautiful, so I made the decision to go with that.
If I can get the results I'm expecting, it should look amazing, I'll keep everyone posted.

Yes. Thank you.Originally posted by Lon View PostMizer, for what it's worth. I'm starting my 3rd flying season with the IronAss. I have been running a 3300 5s with 85a ESC. No issues..hundreds of flights.
I e-mailed Motion and they said, "We don't recommend this plane on 5S", so it's good to hear that you're flying it without issue. There isn't much information out there on the FW version of the Mustang like there is on the FMS variety. I have a spare Mantis 85A ESC I can use as well, so this fits well into what stock I already have on hand, both for ESCs and batteries.

Okay, now here's what I find interesting. Lon has a 85A mantis and the stock 580kv motor (Correct me if I'm wrong here Lon). So, I ordered an 85A Mantis but the bullet connectors were the wrong size, FW being larger than the ones on the ESC. But Lon says his were fine, so I'm wondering if there are two different ESCs that you can get or what?
I do have an 85A Mantis on Big Beautiful Doll which I currently run on 4s, but it should be fine on 5s as well. The FMS 580kv has the correct size bullet connectors to fit the ESC. The one thing I've heard is that if you run 5s, don't do the zip tie prop mod.
Again, this is third hand info as I don't run 5s, so chime in if I'm wrong on any of this.
