  • LA Tank club

Now that the Wuhan Coronavirus restrictions are dwindling the LA Tank club is coming back and people are starting to talk about it.
As a veteran member of the group here along with Rubicon99 I thought I would start a thread.

The club is a loose knit group of come and go folk, previously with no internet interaction, however we have a new Facebook group called “Los Angela’s area RC Tank Club (LaTank)” were people can meet online to interact and follow news of the club.

LaTank meets at the American Military Museum in South ElMonte on Melrose st.
The new battle schedule going forward currently posted is first Saturday of each month starting at 10am.
The club is organized and run by a long time rc tank hobby veteran with a couple assistants though it’s fairly loose.

The museum sells various rc tanks and parts and that brings in an array of tank battlers to events. Lots of kids come and battle tanks with us here.

Setup starts at 10 and you will need a table and chairs for your equipment or find a spot to mooch. Pop ups are generally not needed because of limited space and all the shade trees. However for larger events we spill out the back gate and then you will enjoy a pop up canopy.

parking for the LATank is generally not in the museum parking lot because it is small. We enter the public park called the Narrows a few hundred yards south of the museum on Melrose and then drive a dirt road up to the South side of the museum back gate. You will see cars parking there, then enter the back gate for setup.

The fee is $5 per person and that also covers your entrance to the museum to tour all the real tanks and army trucks on display throughout the museum.

Some benefits of the LaTank club over 619th TB events are many well built field props and buildings scattering the field. The play of battle flow is very different between the two clubs offering different challenges and lots of fun.

if you live in SoCal or plan a visit I recommend you attend an event.

Rubicon99 can elaborate on anything I may have missed.

LA Tank battle events are well worth the drive. The battle field is mostly “close in” city fighting that favors small to medium sized tanks.

It’s a fun day and the club is super inviting and open to having new tankers join in the fun.

I will be at the event with a number of loaner tanks for those without a battle ready tank can give it a try.

Some photos from LA Tank battle day events.

Sounds good just ask for either Rich or Rubicon when you get there. I will have a few loaner tanks so you can watch or take part in a few battles.

I am curious. So is the battle in IR? What type? Most of my tanks are HLs. I have 3 Taigens and 1 Mato. I like them so much that I probably don't want them to go to battle :-). They are probably not the right tanks for the battle anyway. I feel better if I can abuse the HL as they are cheaper. Can anyone guide me to a post that guide me to convert a HL to a battle tank for the LA club? What accessories do I need to buy? I know when I come there, I will be a new guy around many members who will help me in understanding and give me a loaner to test out. But I couldn't wait and I want to know soon, lol.

LA Tank club uses the Tamiya IR battle protocol. Which means stock HL tank can join in with two limiting rules on their use. 1. They must be run on the low power setting. 2. You must wait 6 seconds between shots. This approximates the “medium” tank setting for the Tamiya protocol.

Stock Taigen and Torro tanks are not compatible with Tamiya protocols so they cannot be used in battles.

Most of the tanks being run at the LA tank battles are rather high end tanks with a lot of details. No one will deliberately run into your tanks. Can it happen yes but it is rare.

Upgrading the HL tanks with a LegoDEI battle receiver will greatly improve the experience and is well worth the rather reasonable cost of the receiver.

Bring what you have as a show and tell. Tankers love seeing other people’s tanks and you will get some good feedback on your tanks. Not all tanks are IR battle set up some are simply drivers.

Look forward to seeing you there and feel free to ask more questions if you would like.

Sorry to ask... Do I get the HL IR reciever V1.0? The difference between cross and circle? Red or blue? Do I need IR emitter? What is the sunshade IR receiver? Why is it only $4? Thank you! Which is the one that is in the reasonable $ range that qualify me for the LA battle? I read that there is a type that I can transfer from 1 HL to another. It sounds great that I don't have to equip all HLs with IR and that I can just detach and put on the other tank (if it's possible). Thank you for your advice. I will probably play around with the HLs. I don't know if I can afford myself up to the high end tanks.

Just buy the receiver for HL tanks. It is best to opt for the circular shade. Now understand these LegoDEI receivers are not directly “plug and play” into the stock HL port. You will have to install them which is not hard and many many many folks here on this forum have done it so if you have trouble just post a thread for help and I am sure folks will jump right in with a helping hand.

HL 6.0 and up tanks come with IR emitters that are fine for LA battles.

Sunshade block out the sunlight that defuses the IR beam and makes it next to impossible to hit a tank more then 15’ away. They are a must if you are playing in a club event. The circle is a sunshade.

Color of LED is up to you there are no rules about color.

Bob, I would disagree from experience I have. Testing both, his blue receivers show up much better than red LEDs, however he recently released receivers with super bright red LEDs. They are really super bright, but I have not had the chance to compare them to the blue. I like the blue better because the red of Tamiya and legodei tended to wash out at a distance where the blue was still visible but these new super bright ones might make all the difference.

LA Tank battle day early last year. Don’t miss the battle day this Sat the 7th because there may not be another for a long time if COVID closures come back to LA County.
